Headlight Sucks

So I rode the 9er last night for the first time in the dark, I must say everyone wasn't wrong the stock bulb SUCKS! Plus it needs adjusted. I stopped in a few auto parts stores no one had a H4 well I am going to go online and buy one. Any suggestions? I am thinking PIAA.

Here, let me preview the possible comments:

Switch to a 599 headlight!

NO, don't do that, just buy a JW Speaker LED light.

No way! Do you know how many tanks of gas I can buy for that???

Look guys, just put an HID kit in there. $50 and done.

No way, don't be a jerk with all that glare.

There's not glare if you use the correct kit.

Yes there is.

No there isn't. Use This. Exact. Kit.

I don't believe you and you are not a good person.

Here are pictures, and hey go look in a mirror jerk.

Hey guys, I just wanted to know which bulb to bu

HEY WE'RE HAVING A MOMENT HERE DON'T INTERRUPT HOW RUDE

OK fine I'll start another thread.

...

Hey guys, which bulb for my stock 919 headlamp?

Oh hey, why not just go LED?

But...

Lmao no my Wally World didn't have those. I will not spend the $$$ to get JW or switch to 599. Right now I just want a better bulb. If anything I would do a dual headlight in the future I don't ride much at night

That pretty much sums it up MF1VE

The problem with the 9er headlight is the light pattern, will changing bulbs make any difference?

I bought these from Amazon & like them a lot. The beam of light is actually brighter & wider. There are other brighter & wider bulbs but not that the more powerful a bulb is, the shorter its life is. This was a reasonable compromise between shorter than OEM life & brightness. Comes in a pack of 2 so at $11 per bulb its not too bad.

I really don't shop at Walmart I freaking hate that company! Occasionally we get stuff there maybe 1 or 2 times a yr. I usually find what I want on the net and my buddy gets it anywhere from a few dollars cheaper to more depending on the selling price and markup.

HAH!

599 worked great for me!
and yes there are some HID kits with reduced bulb length and block-off plates to REDUCE glare...but in the end increasing light output is all about playing that delicate balance game of "How much more light will help me be safer VS How much of an asshole can I deal with being to other drivers with all this extra light?" Everyone has their own idea of what's the "right" and "wrong" way to go about doing it with plenty of so-called evidence to support their decisions either way...

It has been mentioned here too that running heavier gauge wire from the battery and using a relay can yield an improvement even with the stock bulb. Not sure how much better, though, as I haven't yet done it myself. It's on the to-do list...

I put a Hella H4 100/80W headlight bulb in back in February of 2008. Brighter light and no problems to date with either the wiring handling the wattage or the headlight lens handling the extra heat output.

This is what I'm using too. My first one burnt out in a few months though; second one has been going for almost a year. It's definitely brighter than stock, but I'm still dissatisfied riding at night.

First.... do a dual relay setup with direct from the battery big awg wires to feed the headlight... stock harness your looking at about a 2v drop to the headlight.... thats 16% reduction in light output right there.

Next with the dual relay setup it makes it real easy to run the high and low beam at the same time.... with the stock lense this makes for a really good close and far dispersion.

I run a PIAA in my 919, Used to use Silverstar ultras, but the PIAA is a big step up. I'm trying to get one of those Cyclops bulbs for my CRF230L hunting buggy. Will test fit it in the 919 when it shows up. a little concerned about the heatsink/cooling fan inside the headlight bucket with all the wires.

Or if you are cheap use 1 relay. Single pole double throw. Have low beams on the normally closed side and high beams on normally open. Then wire the stock high beam positive wire and ground to the relay coil.
