Gas tank leaking

So I have a 2006 919 and have had it for about a year now. There was a spot on the left side of the tank on which the paint started to blister. It got to the point where it started to leak fuel from the tank. I drained the tank and patched up the hole with some JB Weld and it held for a week or two. Now the tank is leaking again and I am not sure what to do.

The local Honda shop quoted me for $515 for the tank (including paint). I'd rather not pay for a new tank but I don't know of any good body shops near me or if they'd even fix a fuel tank.

Anybody had this problem before?

Boskru, so the tank is otherwise undamaged and it just sprung a leak? that seems odd...I'm really not sure what advice to give, I think I would look for a new tank. That sucks, dude!

It couldn't hurt to talk to a body shop about it.

Well, fire the engines! Spur this iron space-pony on!

If it's leaking out the side I'd say your tank integrity is compromised. Did it get dropped or something and have a cosmetic fix applied? I've never heard of a gas tank just up and springing a leak... I'd be worried about getting a tank that leaked patched up...

find out why it started leaking. i wouldnt be surprised if it was damaged somehow. you can always seal the inside of the tank with por-15 (i think it's called?). good stuff.

Yeah I think the previous owner must have somehow puncture the tank and didn't mention it to me. When I peeled all the paint back there was a tiny hole all the way through. It didn't look like damage from being dropped but maybe some sort of damage from being in a garage.

I am probably going to just buy a new tank so that I can have peace of mind that I shouldn't have more problems with it "springing leaks"

I could be wrong, but looks like a skin coat of bondo on it. Damn the luck!

If por-15 contains MEK (methyl-ethyl-ketone) you can forget about using it, unless you are fortunate enough to live in an ethanol-free-gas place.

if you love your motorcycle, set it free.. if it comes back and hits you.. you highsided

Garage
I thought the 919 had a dual layered tank (correct term?). If that is the case, what happened to the inner layer of the tank that is in contact with the fuel.

You could strip it, have it welded and re painted for less than a new tank.

If you want to put a band-aid on it for now try this stuff.
I've used it before and it worked real good.
Total Motorcycle reviews. Seal-All Glue, all-purpose contact adhesive & sealant.

The 919 does not have a dual layer tank. That tank was repaired and the second layer you see is body filler aka Bondo. You can get a brand new tank that comes already painted from honda for less than what the dealer is charging you and put it on yourself. You can always check ebay since the 2006 and 2007 Candy Sonoma Red is all they made for 2 years there should be quite a few of the around.

The tank has been down. I suspect the hole is from where a puller was screwed into the tank to yank out a indent and then it was spot welded up (not very well it appears).

Hidden under bog and good paint.

Bugger.
Pop up a 'tank wanted' advert on WT and see if anyone has a clean one.

I believe that the paint code # is R101CU: Candy Glory Red

I picked up some seal-all to do a temporary patch until I get a new tank. I just pealed off the old JB Weld and noticed that my patch from last week was not the one that was leaking but rather another hold about 1/2 in lower down. I felt around the hold and its pretty weak. I have a new tank on order and should be here with paint and all by Thursday.

looks like someone just repaired it enough to cover it up and sell it. that really sucks dude. i think i might of done the same as you as i'd question the tank's overall integrity due to what you're describing.
