81 cb900 headlight issue

Hello, I'm new to the forum and have a question for anyone who may be able to help. Recently got an 81 CB900 custom. The bike is mint, although I cannot safety it until I get the headlight problem fixed. Therin lies the problem. The headlight will come on when the key is in the P position, however any other position and it will not. Have traced wires and there is nothing I have been able to find wrong, has anyone had this issue or can point me in the right direction?
Thanks for your time,

Starter switch or hi/lo switch. Get a wiring diagram and start at the fuse and work your way to the headlight with a meter.

If I am not mistaken the CB750 /900 series of that year has a low wattage parking lamp bulb in the headlight as well as the usual headlight bulb. What you are seeing is the low wattage bulb on in the park position. Wiring diagram attached.

Of course I recommend checking the actual headlight bulb and fuse before digging into the wiring. This is the only diagram I could find on short notice, so the wire colors are relatively illegible, but it does give enough information to get you pointed in the right direction.

Good luck.

If it has already been done, it is safe to assume it is possible to do it.
On the other hand, if it has not been done never assume it is impossible to do it.
