removing front turn signals

collision(s) have forced me to change out my turn signals but getting the old ones off the stalk has proved challenging. even the owners manual is vague about it. btw '03 919. any hints as to how to get those nuts off the inside of the turn signal stalk.
if nothing else, i suppose i could just leave the stalks then flushmount a pair of aftermarket ones on ...somewhere.
suggestions, hints?

Did you remove the headlight bucket? Makes it MUCH easier.

I think I was able to reach an open ended wrench in there.

i just got them off and the headlight bucket needed to be taken off. then however, it took a small 10 mm socket to extricate the bolt. i hope the on part goes easier than the off part. thanks Goo.
actually i ran across the archive entry from Ken which tipped me off to the bolt size. thanks all.
