CLear Alternatives Tail Light vs ???

I have had some issues with my Clear Alternatives tail light. I purchased the one with the integrated rear blinkers. I received one that was bad from the start and they sent me another at no charge. I installed the second one and it worked for about two years then went out. I then tried to fix the first one (the solder joints were very poorly done) but that only worked for a little while. Has anyone had any luck with other brands? I currently have the smoke lens and like the look of this style on my bike.

The Custom LED integrated tail lights are extremely well built. There are several threads floating around about them. On a side note, I've got an extra Clear Alternatives tail light. If your interested in it PM me.

Buy the customled is the best. Myself and the wristtwisters crew got it custom made into production. You will be amazed at the difference

You'd be fond of it if you saw it in person; it's a thing of beauty, and if it keeps cagers off your butt and out of an accident, all the more worth it.

That is the ONLY thing I kept from my 919 when I sold it, because it fit the 599, and I wanted the safety of that thing for when my wife was riding.

You get what you pay for, really.

The clear alt. light is complete crap, not safe, not very visable by others at any angle or distance unless dead center. It's just not worth it. Get the CUSTOMLED, you'll be blown away.

Am I correct in assuming that the Custom LED light has no housing? Would the Custom LED light fit into the Clear Alternatives housing?

Correct. In fact that's exactly what I did. Took the clearalternatives board out and slid the CustomLED unit in.

You get just the LED board. You can use the stock housing, I bet the clear alternatives one might also fit, but you may have to make some adjustments.

I've had both... in my experience both fit into the stock housing. All I got was the boards for both of them. With the clear alternatives light if you weren't directly behind the light (which isn't the height that most cagers are at) it was almost unseeable. I thought the same thing about the price for the CustomLED light, but now that I've bought it it's totally worth it... I really like the flash on brake feature also. Now I just need to get a smoked lens to go with it...

Lol if you don't like the price of a better quality LED board, you'll REALLY hate the price of a better quality rear shock then

Oh, and it isn't about looks, its about safety. The Clear Alternatives unit is utter shit and NOT SAFE.

I can confirm that the stock bulbs are brighter than the CA crap unit. Also more usable than the CA crap unit.

Thanks for the thoughts on the CustomLED boards. For those that have some experience - how hard is it to swap boards and put the CustomLED board into the Clear Alternatives unit? Even better - anyone know of any videos out there?

It's super simple. I used a hot glue gun to tack the edges of the board down, but I'm not even sure that's needed. Sorry, I don't have a vid or anything. Don't worry about the install too much. Once you start taking it apart its fairly self explanatory.

Does anyone know what makes the custom led board brighter than the CA?

I've picked up morrow's CA unit, frankly i'm not that worried about the brightness. I understand everyone's concerns, to each their own, but generally i'm not putting around waiting for cars to rear-end me and I have never had a close call when stopped, always watch the car stopping behind me at lights. Sure Custom LEDs might be brighter and better, but it's not something i've felt an issue with so far. That said, if i hook it up and think "no way is that noticeable" then it comes off the bike and it's no big deal.

curious though if anyone knows if it's the bulbs or something about the circuit? my friend is pretty good with electronics so wondering if it'd be possible to just replace the bulbs with brighter ones, or replace part of the circuit?

I doubt you could do much with it. It's my understanding that the diodes themselves are bigger and brighter. Here's a vid of the Clear Alternatives.

I had no housing with either unit, just the board, and they both fit into the stock bulb housing.

It's not so much brightness as dispersion. From straight behind the light they're both pretty bright, but from anywhere else the CA unit is almost unseeable. The LEDS they use are cheaper with less viewing angle and as such, the angle at which you see useful light it much smaller. I think I took comparison photos when I installed mine... I'll see what I can dig up.

Update: Thanks to all for the input. I saw some regulars who really seemed to like the CustomLED unit so I did some dog walking, stripped an abandoned house of it's copper, and won second place in a beauty contest and collected my $10 and went and purchased a new CustomLED board. Everyone was right - this thing is bright. It's probably brighter than my headlight. Thanks again to all who posted. I wouldn't have been comfortable spending all that cash without the prior knowledge of everyone here.

Good choice in getting the CustomLED. I tried the Clear Alternative tail light the first time around. Horrible idea, but they did include a clear lense that I am now using with my CustomLED board

I have no issues with people seeing my Clear Alternatives light. It was purchased about 12 years ago, so maybe they started using cheaper parts over the years? I can say the Custom led is far superior, but not without flaw. Some of the guys I ride with have them. They are so bright, it looks like they are riding the brakes. Which can be confusing to other drivers.

I recently switched from a Clear Alternative to a Custom LED light. I have noticed a huge difference in how people react behind me when I brake. I think the pulsing has a lot to do with this. IMHO the clear alternative wasn't worth the money I spent on it. I don't use the integrated feature because I think this just confuses drivers. I used to get really pissed when drivers would ride my butt while I was braking. Now I know they just didn't realize I was braking. I feel much safer since I switched to the Custom LED.
