Why do you ride?

This question was discussed amongst some of us privately a while back. I recall a couple answers pretty clearly, but wonder what others motivations are.....

Can I get bullet point style answers like the following?

-I ride for freedom
-time to think
-time with nature

It's the riding that gives me time to concentrate on nothing else.
It frees my mind from the insanity of real life.
It revs my internal engine and picks me up after a hard day.
It takes me places I would never dream of seeing in a cage.
It takes me to a place that liberates my soul.

Riding is the life I love, the life I anticipate, and the life I enjoy sharing with others who mimic this strange passion.

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

Best enjoyment: The wind blowing through your hair on a hot day as you hold a wheelie for 5 miles on the Interstate wearing nothing more than a tee shirt, cut-offs, and flip-flops.

If it weren't a safety issue. I'd supply you with your choice of any box of cigars, just to see you do that for 1/4 mile! It would be worth the hystrical laughter that I would have for days and the memory for ever! I'm chuckling just picturing it now!

I so need to ride right now! It's hitting me hard. This Friday night I am planning on my most enjoyable ride. Middle of the night ride down to Newport or shore just to sit on the cliffs or beach for an hour or so, or just long enough for a quick nap. The ride down and back offers so much in the way of smells, temperature changes, the darkness with only your light in front of you, etc.

Or, I could just do a speed run to Boston for some screaming insane marathon inducing endorphine raising sweaty clown monkey sex with this sex crazed young lady I know and boogie back for a 7-old Birthday Party Saturday? Hmmmmm ...

It's better to have loved and lost than live with the psycho for life!

Actually, I have no idea. My dad starting riding me around when I was 4 so I guess it's in my blood. Here are some things I enjoy while riding, That will have to be close enough.
  • Taking a 35 at 60.
  • Smokin the sh!t out of lowered civics when they think they have something.
  • Achieving 60mph in 3 seconds.
  • An unrestricted view of my surroundings.

and 45mpg doesn't hurt either

- I get to snack on the strawberries and other fruit in my neighbor's yard during the warm up / pre ride ritual.

- Waving to the hot chick commuting every day on the same schedule. And getting her number...

- Waking up early on Saturday morning and deciding to head up to 5300' in the mountains on a whim.

- Looking over at the poor saps commuting in the cages, and they can't see the smile on my filthy mug.

- As my favorite time is early morning, watching the Sun come up over the mountains in late Spring while grabbing another gear.

Nothing better I say..

Why do I ride? Today it was to go ridin' in the mountains...smelling the fresh pine scent in the air...it was also a good day for the couple of 115mph runs I got in on the flatlands...and I STILL managed to get 53.2 mpg (Hope can verify this!) it was also a day to get caught in a horrendous thunderstorm, getting sopping wet and then deciding to wait it out underneath an overpass ...but I dried out again on those high-speed runs

Well, fire the engines! Spur this iron space-pony on!

I ride to get me away from everything, once I am on the road it is just me and the bike against everything. No phones, one talking, no radio, no tv just me the bike and the road!

Same here, couldn't have said it better. I would add:
-it allows me to leave work "at work" and arrive home relaxed.
-one of the last daily activities that carry an element of danger, forcing you to stay in the moment, or else.

-leaning through the curves

-straddling something that is more gutsy than any reasonable human would think of
-the difference between cruising along and "holy sh*t fast" is a few seconds of full throttle.

Poor mans Zen.

Taking a 35 at 99, one handed.
But the cops say I can't do that.
I proved him wrong.
He gave me a piece of paper that says different.
I stand corrected...
