So I am thinking about what I would buy if I were in the market....

I have looked at everything lately. Just wondering what would be 'the bike' for me if I were going to buy and 08.

So... I of course look at Triumph (since I have had incredible luck with mine) and then the japanese imports.

1) sportbikes... I have owned 5, I will soon have more miles on my Tiger than the five combined - so rule it out. Won't ride it much once the novelty wears off

2) Cruisers... Well, some appeal to me, but in the end, I just do not like the ergos of forward controls and standards don't do anything much for me.

3) Naked... totally naked, the S3 is my favorite, but it falls in the sportbike category to me.

4) Sport Tourer... none of them have the right mix for me. Lots are close, but too much sport or Tourer and not enough of the other. So I rule them out.

5) Super Moto... Fun to commute on, but other than that, I see it collecting dust

6) So I am back to Adventure tourers... or Hybrids of you will. They do appeal to me. More so than the 1/2 nakeds. THe long travel suspension makes for an incredible highway ride. Everything smooths out - and fast!

So- being reasonable with a budget, lets say 12K for a bike. I like the new Tiger, but I rank it with the Bandit and FZ1. Where is my long travel suspension? Tiger, out of the running.

Aprilia and BMW both have large Adventure tourers, but too much $$$ IMO and too heavy (my only complaint about the tiger).

1) So there is the small BMW. Hmmm... got my attention. I think I like it.

2) Then there is a Kawasaki Versys... Very interesting. Price is right. Long traven suspension, only down sides... Looks and availablility of baggage.
(the KLR used to be at the top of my list, but after my TIger mishap in the dirt, I am not seeing me off road with anything other than a true dirtbike.)

Anyhow, no real point. Just looking around and came up witht he BMW and Kawi being my favorites right now.

Oddly... in 03 I would have sworn I would never own either brand.

Well, the KLR is home and the SV will be in the garage tomorrow. You are welcome to either. Which BMW are you speaking of? The 800, or the 650? I'll go ahead and tell you the new 650 is a hoot for short trips, but beyond that it's useless. Add to that, I bought two bikes for the same price as the BMW 650.

Wouldn't it be nice if Triumph made a Tiger out of the 675?

The Suzuki 650 V-strom just won an award from Motorcyclist as a great adventure bike for under 10K. I would imagine that it is very much like your Tiger though.

if you get a VFR (assuming you haven't ridden a newer gen model) get an '01... the VTEC SUCKS!!! it's a kick in the pants at 6400rpm and you don't want that while you're leaned into a corner!

oh the pain!

After spending a Sunday playing on the SV650, I have an itch now.
But an itch is fine with no money to back it up! Cause no matter the answer... you cant afford to scratch it.

After some thought today and then a PM, I think this would be perfect for me....

01-03 F4i.
I would gets springs for the forks, a penske double clicker for the rear, power commander and a Akro Evolution full exhaust and a corbin seat...

I think that would be the great compromise of fun and power....

Yes but after thinking about the Goldwing the past year and talking Laurin into getting one, I think its too early (mid thirties) to own one. Think I need a step in between.

They will still make Goldwings in five years.
BMW, St or Tiger makes more sense.

I'm not sure you ready either.

I am sure I am ready...... but not financially.
The problem with the GS for me is that is would just be a bike to hold me over and no place for it in my garage after the purchase of a GW.

As for the F4i... no shortage in finding them.... problem is cash!
And the fact the SV in the garage is also tempting.

Now i have no moneys..... but somehow everything get mucked up when that happens....

I swung into the local triumph dealer today to confirm what Simspon told me last week....

"2 New Triumph Bonnevilles at dealer invoice of $6995.00 . Have one in black and one in white, Both come with $500.00 worth of accessories until the Triumph promotion ends. Both are brand new ,never ridden or even prepped."

It is true.... Crazy!
The only catch is you register and tag it. When you register it, you will pay the state tax if in VA. (3%)

Wow!

You know Mike...After reading this...I totally agree with you. I've ridden the F4i's and they rock. They are just like my 2 previous cbr600's except with the crisp response of fuel injection.

And honestly, I still would love to have a full blown sport bike in my garage to ride when I feel the urge. The more I think after the points you have made, the more a fuel injected 600 would be perfect.

So... A little tease and you can get a lotta bike for around $3500 !!!

My 94 F2 and my 97 F3

Both bikes rocked!

They were quick on the top end, Grab a handful of throttle at mid rpm in 1st gear and they would stand right up if you had the urge to wheelie and they handled well. Even with stock suspension.

Thats my oldest in the pic with my F2 (she is now 11)

That gives you an idea how long ago I had that bike. That was my 1st real sport bike and I loved it.

It sold with 36k on clock and ran like a champ!

I think no matter what bike hondaf4iguy gets...

-he will not wash it
-he may oil the chain once a year pending it has one
-he will not feel complete

*The bonneville will be nice around town but lack the sport bike excitement acceration and long touring capabilities.

*The F4I will satisfy the sport bike excitement but he cannot take long trips and tour.

*The oldwing will cover the casual touring, trips and commutes around town but not give the excitement of riding with the buddies on sandbridge and its cost prohibitive.

*The sportster will do nothing satisfactory

What I can see is hondaf4iguy getting comfortable in a relationship, attending school and absorbed with more work. Unless the girl suddenly likes touring, realistically he will not have many days to utilize the bike this way (maybe like 2-3 days a year). He will dispute me on this point but thats because he can't see the forest from trees yet. The girl will absorb nearly 90% of available touring time in the coming years. Best deal at this point and going forward 5-10 years is a Tiger/GS like bike. This is a bike that can cover most craving points. In 5-10 years I will most likely own a full blown touring bike, and I will use it with the girl. If I don't use it with her, than I will be single (she dumped me) because I don't think most women like the idea of their guy taking off without them with what little time you have available.

There is no perfect bike but there are all mostly fun.
Happy hunting Gump

Get the F4i and lets go ride some twisties!

Seriously though...I see all of Jer's points in you right now Mike. Follow what you feel will satisfy your addiction to ride. I could tell you were having a blast on the SV.

The F4i may be no touring bike but it can still be ridden all day with a few minor comfort changes and you have already addressed the main one with the addition of a Corbin. And it will satisfy your corner carving addiciton I saw come out in you last weekend!

Besides, If you get a F4i, I will have someone to goto VIR with next year

Cause I don't see Simpson going

Everything hinges on when I have money and when the bikes in my garage sell. There is an outstanding offer for me to buy the SV. The price is more than right...but I cannot justify any money right now, so we are just dreaming here......

As for the corner carving addiction..... It was just fun. he SV worked well when I was riding well with in my limits and safety measures for the road we were on. I have never actually gotten on it, so I am not really aware of what it can do with me at the controls. All I know is that I needed to carry corner speed to get any kinda speed on exit.... Allt hew F4i offers me is easier wheelies..... (never mind the fact I have a slight love affair with the bike.)

The SV is cool...But if it were my choice, it would be F4i all the way.

Come to think of it. I wish I could convence my friend to look into one for his first bike.

LOL! Nice one Jeremy.

Sure.
I guess I should not talk motorcycles at all since I dont own one nor is it high on my priorities to get one.

Think I might just go ahead an spend more time on the mountain bike forum.
