919 and VFR800

I have the itch to get another bike in the stall. I will not part with the 919. I have my eye on a 09 VFR with less than 5000 miles on it. Dealer is asking $7499. My problem is that for that kind of money you can go out and buy a brand new FZ09. I am not interested in the FZ but, I want something that not all people have and I want to stay around $6000 so, if anyone out there has any suggestions, I am open to listen. So far the VFR800 has it.

If you're going to spend that kind of money, go for something completely different like a sumo. You can probably get a DRZ400SM or WR250X and save a ton of cash for mods.

You should scratch that itch with a Blackbird. VFR800's are ghey, imo.

We must have similar tastes in bikes. I've owned my 919 for 10 years. I added a 2001 VFR several years ago and then sold it. I now have a 2006 VFR and still have no intention to sell my 919. If you are set on VFR's I'd suggest you choose 2006 or newer. Those have improved electrical and VTEC transition. You should be able to find a 2006 in the low $5000's. I had been searching for a 2007 for better paint colors but chose a low mileage black 2006 last fall.
If you can afford the insurance you could consider a 1000 Ninja or Z1000. Kawasaki's seem to depreciate more quickly and so you may be able to find some good deals.

I would rather stick to the VFR. I want one for more of a long distance cruiser but, still have the sporty feel. I am looking at a 09 with less than 5000 miles on it and they are asking $7499.

I was in a similar position last month. I looked at a 08 VFR with aftermarket exhaust and 6K miles for 6500. I didn't care for the seat position or seat height.
I ended up with an 06 FJR AE. Comes with bags and insurance was cheaper than the VFR. The AE is pretty sweet IMHO. Put about 700 miles on it so far and the thing will haul. Turn in on the twisties definitely takes more muscle than my 919.
They seem to compliment each other.

It depends upon what you will use the second bike for. I have two 919's. one for touring and one for day rides. The ST1300A is my long distance mile muncher.

Honestly, if you already got a nekked and have 8 grand burning a hole in your pocket, I wouldn't buy either. I'd either get a nice DRZ and Sumo it or buy a cruiser, which you actually could travel long distances on with little fan fare. You can find 2007 VT1100's all day long for around 4500 bucks on cycletrader. Add a windshield and some travel friendly accessories... Saddlebags, some nice gear for colder riding when necessary, hell even a radio... Shit, that is the ticket, and you will still have some cash left over. The hornet is awesome for knocking around, twisting things up, and just fun driving, and I love it for that, but when you get out on the highway it will beat you to fucking death at anything over 75, unless you kit it out like Ken has, but if you are just going to be doing some straight up traveling, and not going off on trails, I'd take a cruiser any time. Making the Hornet, or VFR or anything other than a cruiser comfortable takes some work, and to me I like the idea of leaving my Hornet all nekked, and having something else with windows, luggage, and a cup holder.

just my $.02 though

I love my VFR... Although it's a 1200... Sometimes I wish I still had my 9er for stomping around the city, but when out on the open road the VFR is hard to beat.

I thank you all for your input. I ended up buying a 2004 FJR with 18,000 on the clock dressed with Givi hard bag set, PC3, 2 brothers exhaust and much more. It will take a bit to get used to the handlebars but, I think it is a sweet bike and sounds like a sleeper at that. Thanks a bunch!!!

You can't go wrong with an FJR while keeping the 919. A more purposeful cruiser than the VFR and i'm sure you saved $$. Good decision.
