What's up?

I swear I haven't seen any good Spuid stories here on WT in ages...I think it's time to liven things up a bit.

I saw 3 riders on blue/white sportbikes blatantly blow through a red light the other day here in Boulder, the red light camera caught them, though....kids today...

Well, fire the engines! Spur this iron space-pony on!

Let's define squid. What we call a squid up here fits the description of a large number of sport bike riders that I see on vacation every year on the East coast USA: sport bike, t-shirt or tank top, shorts, shoes or flip-flops with no socks. We have helmet laws, so that isn't optional. I think that is where our definitions vary a bit.

Here's my recent encounter: I was out for a ride out to my local twisties. About 10 minutes away I catch up to a squid couple on an R1. The petite girl on the back had a tiny shirt on and low cut jeans and nothing shoes. Her boyfriend wasn't much better.

I stayed with them until we got into the turns when dude picked it up several notches. I decided to back way down. I didn't want any part in egging him on, especially with his little passenger. Dumb ass...

Well, I wanted to get a pic of the guy but missed my chance. He was what I think is the only aged squid I've seen. Probably like 50 or so. Southbound freeway during rushhour on my way home, no gear just shorts and t shirt. What tops it off is the guy actually had his left elbow on the fuel tank resting his chin in his hand as if freeway traffic is so boring. Like the "Thinker" position. Unreal.

Iowa doesn't have a helmet law either. I personally only wear my helmet 1/3 of the time. I have only had my helmet for 4 months now I purchased it a days after I bought the 9er. I've been riding for 4 years and this is my first year having a helmet. I have noticed that rarely will I ever see another rider wearing a helmet. I do like the fact that I have a choice on whether to wear a helmet or not, but i do enjoy wearing one as the bugs don't hit my face and the wind noise seems to be reduced.

My favorite is when you see the dude all decked out with the propped gear an then his GF on the back with absolutely no protective gear what so ever. It's obvious he knows the dangers but let's his girl ride unprotected!

Anyone who doesn't wear a helmet is a squid in my book.

Agreed the simple act of not wanting to protect your own life puts you right into the squid category. Do not pass go do not collect $200

Let nature take its course.

There is a tremendous need for organ donors.

Hopefully they have not reproduced yet and passed the "stupid gene" onto a subsequent generation.

I live on the NJ/PA border and see the helmet less don their tupperware equivalent before they cross the bridge into Jersey.

Doc

True, but you need them alive long enough to donate. The guys with no gear other than a helmet are the perfect squids looking at organ donation as a metric.

No helmet law in Indiana, was struck down several years ago under strong lobbying from ABATE. Ironic that the same organization offers the MSF courses that teach you to always wear a helmet. We do have seat belt laws though, go figure!

Aound here the vast majority of riders are without any safety gear but a helmet and work boots but that may be because of the unusually hot season.

95% of the riders I see on sport bikes ride by with a t-shirt, shorts, sneakers, and of course elbows locked straight....
