Thinking about riding up to Niagara Falls July 4th weekend

Memorial Day wkend trip (see thread) completed, I am thinking about riding up to Niagara Falls on July 2nd, and riding back July 4th. 8 hours by highway, 9-10 hours by nicer roads - one way.

Anyone have any experience up there? How's the traffic, and would it be a bitch to visit on the wkend of the 4th?

It would not be my first choice on a Holiday Weekend.

I would prefer less traffic and less people.

I would say it would be packed full of people. I too would choose another destination.

I'm headed up there with my kids on June 24-25. I chose those dates, hoping we would miss some of the holiday crowd. I've never been there before, so I have no idea what to expect. I'm envisioning giant tourist trap, though.

*sigh* I've heard the same warnings from my friends. Fine, we'll just have to figure out something else for the wkend of the 4th. Any suggestions?

My buddy wants to hit up a distillery in Tennessee, I just don't see my lady having a great time there.

If you end up hitting Niagara Falls on the Canadian side, shoot me a PM and I can show you some great roads very close to there. If you are hitting Tenessee, dont forget the Dragon!

With only three full days, you are limited as to where you can go and get back within that period of time. Look at the tour as a triangle where you start and end at the same point with each side as a day route. You will have to cut down your daily mileage to include attraction/s. Not knowing where you are starting from in Virginia, it would be hard for me to make a suggestion. 250-300miles/day is a healthy day at my age on back roads in good weather.

Apologies for the slight hijack, but doesn't anyone have any dining recommendations for the Canadian side of the falls?

I would say hit up some of the Civil War battle sites around you or even Colonial Williamsburg. I am willing to bet there will be some fantastic fireworks at any of those places and maybe some reenactments. Also you know the rides to some of those places will be bitchin too!

Toronto for some REAL Chinese food. Mmmmmmmmmmm

I can't remember if it was PA or NY but there were some AWESOME mountain roads that carve straight through the mountain. There's also some awesome water views as with chitloads of porn shops at one point, one after another.

Last picture is something I spotted at one of the Asian malls, I just had to have it.
I then gave it to my boss for a Christmas gift.

Doc, I'm 20 min southwest of DC. We did 1000 miles in 3 days (Memorial Day wkend), so that's doable.

Dave, I grew up 45 minutes from Williamsburg (Virginia Beach), so I've been to Jamestown/Williamsburg plenty.

Jeffie - I think Canada might be too far for us...and fyi, I've been to Chinatown in NY, got plenty of dimsum and blackmarket pr0n from there, lol. Also had an ex from Alhambra who was Chinese, got plenty of action there as well.

I don't recommend Niagara Falls. I was there by pure coincidence about 1 year ago - had a 3-day work assignment 20 minutes from the falls. I drove up early one afternoon just because it was so close. I had always imagined it would be much bigger, but it's not. It's just water running over a cliff and not nearly as high as it looks on TV. You stand there, take pictures, and watch the boats below getting spray. There are various points for better pictures, mostly from the Canadian side as you get see the full "horseshoe" view. I would never book a trip just to see the falls. There are casinos, restaurants and all the tourist trap types of souvenir shops.

If you want to hit the road and meet another WTers, talk to Doc. We are planning a trip up north: NJ, NY, PA sometime around the 4th.
No highway for this trip

Thanks for the endorsement, but our run will be later in the month. I will just be returning from Tennessee the weekend of the Fourth.

My parents lived in Newport for a few years - wouldn't mind going up there, but that's yet another long haul for a 3 day'er.

Maybe we'll just head down to the Outerbanks - my buddy's parents just built a house there, and I haven't surfed in 5 years.

Shmoo just go someplace off the wall. The Outerbanks are going to be just as packed as Niagara

I'm still thinking in triangles: Lots of good roads connecting D.C. to Milford, Pa, to Clearfield, Pa. and back......or......D.C. to Marrietta, OH, to Welch, WV and back.

You could make the sides of the triangle as large or as small as you want depending upon time and conditions; and there is always the Interstate if you want to get somewhere quickly. I'm getting to the point where I will take a couple of days to get to a location and then do day loops(shamrock tours) while lodging in one place for three nights.............. but then that's me. I have done 48 States and 9 Canadian Provinces with five trips coast to coast and back. I'm no expert, but I do have a little experience.

If you get up to the Tri-state area(NY, NJ, & Pa.), give me a shout for some good roads.
