Funeral of Pfc. Bryant Haynes on Westboro picket list

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church — the Topeka, Kan., group that preaches, "God Hates America" — plan to bring their message to the funeral of Pfc. Bryant Haynes, a Monroe native who died in Iraq last week.
Haynes, a 21-year-old former Ouachita Parish High School student who was serving in the Louisiana Army National Guard, died June 26 in Al Diwaniyah, Iraq, of injuries sustained during a vehicle rollover. His funeral is 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Monroe.
In a news release, Westboro Baptist Church signaled its intent to preach its message "in respectful, lawful proximity to the memorial of Pfc. Bryant J. Haynes" beginning around 1:15 p.m.
Monroe Police Maj. James Fried said his department will have a police presence near the church. By Friday afternoon Fried said the group had not filed for a permit, but the group can legally assemble on any public sidewalk.
Louisiana law does require pedestrians and operators of all motor vehicles to yield the right-of-way to each vehicle participating in a funeral procession.
The group has picketed other military funerals with their trademark signs and chants.
The release spelled out the group's message in its largest font: "God hates America and is killing our troops in his wrath."
The release continues: "Military funerals have become pagan orgies of idolatrous blasphemy, where they pray to the dunghill gods of Sodom & play taps to a fallen fool."
The release ends with: "These soldiers are dying for the homosexual and other sins of America. God is now America's enemy, and God Himself is fighting against America. Thank God for IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices)."
Asked to confirm the church's intent to "preach" near Mount Zion Baptist Church, church member Shirley Phelps-Roper replied to The News-Star in an e-mail: "Indeed!"
Phelps-Roper's e-mail goes on to suggest the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is the work of God.
"That OIL, The Beautiful Oil, a great teacher, is going to make you learn to fear that glorious and fearful name, THE LORD THY GOD! You should have listened and you should have OBEYED!"
The original release asserts the church's constitutional right to "warn America" and called any effort to deny those rights a declaration that "America is a nation of sodomite hypocrites."
