Parts bike

So, I was just doing a ride through the military housing today and I noticed another niner.... It just sits in the back of someones house.... in pieces... tank on the ground....that kinda stuff.
Just looks neglected.
I live in a pretty small town. I have never even seen another niner (on the road). I wonder if it it running or not. I would like to find out if he would sell it, but I dont want him to think its now worth a shit load just because someone wants it. So this is Canada after all.... I can easily go knock on his door and ask him about it....

Any thoughts? How should I approach this? Keep in mind, my niner is working top notch and dont NEED anything. I did notice the after market exhaust on his niner. Looks like Yoshi.

Advice?

Just be up front. Say you noticed the bike and tell him that you sometimes consider having a parts/project bike. Tell him that if he was ever interested in selling to give you a call. See where it goes from there. Don't show any desperation and certainly don't drool over the Yosh! Either that or go with Rickards idea....

Let us know how it goes.

So, just an update. I did talk to the owner of this niner. It's a 2006 with 6500 kms. He t-boned some chick last summer. The front end was damaged including forks, tire, light, gauges, rad, tank and the downpipes were bent quite a bit. It has a corbin with backrest, Yoshi slipons, and brand new pilot power rear wheel.
So, I made him an offer of $500 for all the aftermarket parts and told him I may be interested in the whole bike because I knew Helimech in Nova Scotia was looking for a engine. After talkin to helimech we split the cost. $800 was the deal for the whole bike. $400 each is a great deal I think. I will take the seat, pipes, rear rim and tire, and the tail with the lights and grabrail. Helimech gets the rest.

good deal? any thoughts?
If I can ever find out how to upload pics, I will add them.

The more i think about this the better I think of your deal. Let's look at the aftermarket parts alone and what they typically go for used:

Corbin: $250 - 300
Yoshis: $300

Then add the near-new tire, which is about $150-200 up here, plus the spare tail parts...

Yup, you got a great deal.

$400 for everything else for the other guy is great too. The motor is hardly broken in!

Someone cut him off so he decided to take a short cut through a forest? Are you selling any parts off it? I am interested in a couple.

Helimech will have the bulk of the parts. Give him time to do the motor swap and I'm sure he will be trying to recover some of the cost.

Would you be interested in parting with the back rest?

While doing the flapper mod the other day I realized the small rubber fitting on the plastic side cowl is missing. Its the little rubber fitting that helps hold that cowl on along with the 5hex. Any way I could get that piece off of whoever has that section of the bike?

I might have one of those - I bought a box of parts from MotoCycho and I think there might be some of those in there.

Send me a PM with your address and I'll get back to you on if I've got any...

Helimech came today and got the rest of the "parts bike". If you need parts, send him a message. I kept the yoshi's, corbin seat, rear rim/tire/sprocket, and whole tail assy. Good luck Helimech on getting that engine up and runnning.

Justin,
It was really nice to meet you and your family. Thanks for helping me out I will keep you in the loop with my progress on the motor swap. It's not everyday you meet a guy for the 1st time and 5 minutes later he is passing you his helmet and keys telling you to take his 9'er for a rip.

I stripped the parts bike this morning. I found that the aft lower engine case mount is busted on the R/H side. I can easily get it welded up and it should be good to go. Compression is solid on all 4cyl and other then the mount and stator cover it seems great.

I basically have 2 big piles......one off stuff to throw away and one of parts to keep. I will be posting a FS: thread once I get all the remaining parts surveyed & have some spare time to shoot some pics.

Cheers,
Ian

That back rest was a must for me. My wife really needed the sence of security.
If I ever get a top case, that backrest may go. As for now, it's here to stay.

Really glad to here the compression test went well. Did you get power to the system to see for sure how many KMS were on that engine? I can't wait to hear that 9er of yours run nice and smooth.

Don't forget, WT members love pics...

Good luck Ian,
JP

Here are a few pics of the carnage. The frame is bent down the main spine. The R/H rear upper engine mount on the frame is blown open and the R/H rear lower engine mount is cracked off the case. Yet both front mount ears are perfectly fine...
