Kawasaki Ticket to Ride

I went to the Washington DC event today in Bowie, Maryland

You can see all the events at Kawasaki Ticket to Ride: Home

Check in line

Very well run and organized event and I was surprised at the test ride. It wasn't just around the parking lot. A Kawi rep led the groups on an approximately 20 mile ride through some city, twisty roads and a little highway.

Arrived at 8:15 am and it was raining. They wont ride in the rain, so I got my ticket to ride a new Ninja 1000 at 4:30 pm

Came back at around 4:00pm and set my sights on this beauty

All I can say is WOW. Great bike. Power delivery was similar to the 9'er only it is much more of a beast . Great fit and finish, very smooth motor and transmission. Exhaust note sounded great out of the box. Hard to tell from just a test ride, but the seat was fairly comfortable. Leg room seemed about the same as the 9'er. I'm 6'3" and wished for just a little more. The pegs were back just a bit and had a little more forward body lean (I have stock bars on the 9'er), but was still pretty comfortable riding position. Handles pretty good in the twisties from what I could tell, but I had a guy in front of me on a ZX-6R that was slowing way down in the corners. Only real negative I felt on the ride, was that it was a hard bike to ride slow (city traffic), but maybe just because it was new to me. If I were ready to replace the 9'er this bike would be way up on the list.

Saw a couple of mishaps...This guy...

....crashed the Versys before he got out of the parking lot ...poor guy

Kawi has a great lineup and if one of these events come near you it's most definitely worth a look. If the weather is nice tomorrow, i'm going back for the Concours

All the pics I took are at Kawi Ticket to Ride

Did you stick around from the AM until 4pm, Mike?

Glad you got to ride it around. Hopefully the weather holds up this morning for ya.

Thanks Ick.

I went home at about 9am and came back around 4 for my 4:30pm ride. It's almost like a reservation to ride a particular bike at a set time, and they stay right on schedule.
Very well done event.

Looks like a great opportunity to test out some bikes. I'll have to mark it on my calendar for July when they come up to Boston. Thanks for the heads up.

Coming up again this weekend in the DC Area...Still deciding what to ride this year. Anyone else going?

Kawasaki Street Demo Days

Weather for Sunday looks a little iffy, and they don't let you ride in the rain.

Thought about going since its 10 minutes away from me. I'd want to take the 10R out for a spin, sadly I doubt they'd let me ride it..... if you know what I mean. I'd just get to follow around with some other guys and toot along.

Last year I tried out a 1400 Concours to compair it to my beemer and my beemer wins.
This year I have try out the 14 Ninja to see how bad my 2008 14 Ninja feels compaired to the 2012.

Honda is doing pretty much the same thing this weekend at participating dealers.

I really wanted to do it this year, but just couldn't work it out. Really wanted to try the Concourse and Ninja 1000.
I did sign up for the 848 Streetfighter test ride at least.

The Seattle area event is June 9-10 - I've had my eye on the Ninja 1000 for a couple years now. Hopefully I'll get a chance to ride one.

You're probably right. It also depends on the other riders in your group. I might try out a cruiser this year, just because I have never ridden one and maybe a Z1000 or a Versys.

Last year the rides were about 20 minutes long and as soon as we hit the hiway the lead man took off so we got to play a little bit. Some of the other riders and myself let those in front get some distance then we played.

Ride may have been short but you just sign up to ride again and be prepaired to wait.

Went to the DC event today. Very well run event and the Kawi folks were really nice and very knowledgeable about their products. It was a little crowded because rain is predicted for tomorrow. 30 minute ride in varying conditions, Highway, twisties, and city.

I wanted to ride a Z1000, but I would have had to wait 3 hours, so I picked a Versys. Cool little bike, tall and lots of legroom, parallel twin sounded like lawnmower compared to an inline 4. Versys would make a nice little commuter bike, but no way it could replace the 919 for me.

I went to the Seattle-area event yesterday. Same as others have reported - an escorted 30 minute ride on freeway, town, and backroads. My friend is looking for his first bike and really likes the styling of the sports bikes. I talked him out of an R6 for his first bike, and suggested the Ninja 650. I test-rode it to see if it would be a good beginner bike, and for a budget bike I was really impressed with how smooth and balanced it feels. The low-end felt almost restricted, but once up to speed it felt fine. I wound it up to 6K rpm on the freeway and held it for a little bit and there was almost zero vibrations, in fact everything about the bike felt very smooth and relaxed. Even the budget suspension felt great on railroad crossings, manhole covers, potholes, etc. I wouldn't buy one for myself, but if it was the only bike available, I would gladly take it out or 300-400 miles through the mountains, and have a blast riding it all day!

Next up was the Ninja 1000 - Holy hell this thing likes to run! It wants to GO all the time! I only got it up to about 85, but it was so effortless. At one point I tried to bog it a bit, running at about 30 miles an hour in 4th gear, less than 3k rpm, and hit the throttle. No bog, no hesitation, just power. Going from 30 to 80+ mph took a couple seconds. I absolutely love this engine!! It's supposed to be 20lbs heavier than the Z1000, but it didn't feel excessively heavy. Riding it through traffic, tight corners, etc. was effortless. It's so smooth and comfortable.

I thought about sticking around to ride the ZX-10 and ZX-14, but that would have meant waiting for a few more hours since they were the most popular bikes and reservations filled up quick.

I probably won't get rid of the 9'er for a while yet, but after lusting over the Ninja 1000 since first seeing it a couple years ago, and now finally getting to ride it, it's definitely at the top of my shopping list.

Maybe Kawi is providing some help in moving the old inventory. Whatever it is, I like it.
