Hanging with "marylandmike"

Now that the riding season here in the Mid-Atlantic region is in full swing (barring the horrendous rain we've been getting lately), my gf and I decided to make it a point to check out lighthouses this year. I grew up in Virginia Beach and have been fascinated by these things since my 2nd grade project about them.

So, I send a message to marylandmike, and with as much planning as I've ever done, we set to meet around lunch time in the town of Dahgren.

I wake up on the morning of, and had to do my 'final' of 3 oil changes since my brake fluid incident. Ha.

My buddy (and neighbor) Toshi and his FZ1 rolled over around quarter after 10. And I'm running late as usual, and having quit smoking cigarettes after 15+ years of being best buds with it, I was cranky as shit.

Ok, so away we go.

We stop outside of Fredericksburg and give a shout to Mike...we set to meet at McD's in Dahgren.

The suspects - me (left) and Toshi (right) talking about our morning crankiness puffing on "Black 'n Milds" - yeah, he's a pipe smoker:

Also introducing my gf, who is ALWAYS down for a ride:

Met up with Mike's butt, and had a quick lunch prior to taking off:

and we're off:

On our way to the first lighthouse @ Piney Cove:

Piney Cove lighthouse. Shortest I've seen. :

A better pic of Mike. Coincidentally, we were next to a petroleum port of sort (see background):

Back on the road towards lighthouse #2:

Mike tried taking us to Point No Point lighthouse, but we couldn't find a road to take us there. The lighthouse itself is 2 miles off the coast.

Anyways, the third lighthouse - Drum Point lighthouse:

D'oh, we arrive a day early to Cove Point lighthouse (they open in May).

At this point it's about 5-6pm, and Mike's gotta make his way back home. We continue on as I wanted to check out Chesapeake Beach (and damn glad we did):

We park at a biker friendly (bike parking out front) place called "Thursdays Bar & Grill". We sit outside, and soon after a guy comes rolling up on a riding lawnmower. He parks it next to our bikes.
He's on crutches, and has a leaf blower with him.
He disappears inside, comes back out without the leaf blower, with a glass of water in his hand. He starts chatting with a couple that's eating dinner, who most likely did not want to be bothered.

Toshi takes a video as he's leaving (hope you guys can see it, as it's on Facebook):

Welcome to Facebook - Log In, Sign Up or Learn More

We're chatting with the waitress, I tell her we've seen a few sheriff cars roll pass him without batting an eye. She goes on to tell us that he's a local boy, has been all his life, and even ran for the city mayor last year. His campaign being "trash pick up and painting buildings".

We finally get home around 9:30pm, I light a cigar and sip a Corona while I let my ass reshape itself.

Big thanks to Mike for showing us around. It was great meeting him, and his bike is very cool (check out his chain oiler!). Mike, we'll be back so we can do the cruise!

Wow fantastic writeup and pics from the day:

I had a great day with Ick (Shmoo), his lovely girlfriend, and Toshi. They are really good people and we had a blast around the scenic areas of Southern Maryland. Ick has a really nicely modded and great sounding '04 9'er and Toshi has a really nice red FZ.

I certainly felt at the end of the day that I have 3 new friends. A few pics:

Like Ick said we missed a couple due to locked gates and such, but it was a great day of riding. I even found some new roads to play on.

Looks like a great trip. There are a few lighthouses up on the Northshore. I have been to one, (not inside) and have some pics at home. One my bucket rides is to loop Lake Superior. One of these years...

That's some very nice country you've snapped and ridden, Shmoo. It's like a historic picture book to me, being a California flagellum my whole life.

My buddy Area 51 Stan and I are ginning up a trip up Coast Hiway 1 here in California. It will be next to impossible to top your pics there, but I'll post some none the less. It's good to share our apple juice and fruit rollups.

@ Flycatcher -

I go to Grand Marais every year with the wife for our anniversary. A long weekend little trip. Anyways, once you get past Two Harbors things start getting very cool, like rock formations and waterfalls and stuff. Plus, if you have a chance to go in Split Rock lighthouse, definitely do it. You can walk right up to the Fresnel lens still. Apparently the whole super heavy rotating structure floats on a liquid mercury bearing. Super cool. Free admission too.

I get up there at least once a year with the family. Do a lot of hiking. Been to every town all the way up to Grand Marais, including the lighthouse, but it was closed the last time we there. Actually proposed to my wife in Gooseberry falls. Our last trip was to Loon Lake on the Gunflint trail. The owner and his wife cook you breakfast and dinner and it's some of the best food I've ever had. We'll be heading up there again.

Damn. Next time you guys are gonna go riding in the NoVa/DC area give me a heads up. I'm still trying to learn the area and don't have a lot of nice roads I know by heart, and I'd like to let my wife get to some twisties on her 929

I'm up for a ride just about any weekend with good weather. I want to head up to the Skyline Drive area before too long.

Living in Stafford have you ever ridden 218 between Fredericksburg and Dahlgren, very nice twisty road if you don't get stuck behind a slowpoke.

Yeah, my wife and I rode it down to Fairview Beach, not all the way to Dahlgren. She wanted to go to Tim's Rivershore II, funny thing is we didn't go in when we got there because it was way too crowded. We ended up just having a nice lunch next to the river, pretty cool. My team lead keeps trying to get us out to Skyline, but we haven't had the chance yet, and I don't think my wife would do it just because she gets pretty cramped up on her bike on long trips, we usually end up making stops every 45 minutes or so.

The only other back road exploring we've done here was taking courthouse road down to its end, then heading south through brooke on the 608 to 607, then the 218, then into oldtown F'burg, there's some nice country roads that are pretty clear. Nothing twisty, but nice scenery.

Joplin Rd, next to Quantico is pretty nice, but you have to keep an eye out for the deer at dawn and dusk, cause those jerks are known to time their crossing for the worst possible times!

I like it cause it lets me get a nice ride in but still be close enough that I'm not going out of my way when I head up to woodbridge or somewhere North-ish.

Ha! I'd love to say I do fast things there, but I haven't been riding a big bike for all that long (This is my second year since I upgraded from my Rebel 250!), so I'm working my way up slowly. I was riding down it going pretty much the speed limit one day and a dude on a sport bike zipped past me, looked like he was doing about 60 or 65.
