Gave the ole girl some love!

Well i have seriously neglected my 919 over the last few years..... literally only rode it 450 miles within the last year.... 120 of which was 2 weekends ago. So I decided to show her some love and start riding her more, but first some maintenance.

She wasnt complaining or running weird, classic running like a top as always, but it was time for.
  • New FPR (cus, its a 13 year old bike and these are known to go)
  • New Thermostat (cooling system needed some love and this part was cheap)
  • Fully flush and clean the entire cooling system (including the GROSS surge tank)
  • New Battery
  • New Oil n Filter
  • New Air filter

I still will never get over how smooth and turn key the 919 is. It just works.

Ride safe all!

Nd4spdbh good job on lovin ya old girl.
Where did you get your thermostat from? I'm thinking on replacing mine. It's 15 yrs old and sat in a non running bike for 10 of those years. My bikes running temp just sits on top of the C mark (dash gauge). Maybe will do what Mike and others did and run a hotter thermostat? Maybe test mine also.
I agree with you in regards to 919s engine reliability. Honda small engines are incredibly reliable. Especially in regards to cold starts after sitting for extended periods. I've seen honda 5hp engines on fishing boats, running pumps, generators etc that shouldn't really work anymore. 30yrs old, steel covers rusted away, no muffler, bit of rope pull start, electrics hanging out. I reckon I'll still be riding my 919 after an apocalypse and it will look just like one of those fishing boat honda's. Minus the rope pull start.

I got the T-stat, FPR, and air cleaner (hiflo filtro) from the local shop that hooks me up.

I thought about running a hotter tstat as my bike sits right at the notch in the line just above the C, but you know what..... the stock one works, and keeps the bike damn cool and thats what i like. (especially on those 95+*f days blasting the canyons with the fan running full tilt to keep things cool) Stock Tstat is right inline with every other motor's operating temps i have seen.

Start to open is 176-183*F, full open is 203*F .... unfortunately i didnt see anywhere in the service manual that states the temps the fan kicks on and turns off at.

The T-stat is stupid easy to get to being right on the outside of the motor... hell the FPR was stupid easy to get to as well.... removing the coolant reservoir tank ugh not so much, rear shock and both side panels have to come off for that.
