fixing to take the plunge...

after threatening to repaint the 9er for over a year now, the time is right... a buddy of mine who works for a well known paint supplier said he will shoot the tank, fenders, rear cowl; also considering doing the rear hugger and side panels, all I have to do is the prep work. Going to take the opportunity to fix a couple of small dings in the tank from where the previous owners bar end mirrors contacted it. I'm going to start breaking her down tonight; my plan is to do the paint in Indigo Pearl Metallic with an Arctic White stripe down the front fender and tank, (Shelby Cobra), but I am open to suggestions... I was also considering Honda red(too Nighthawkish), pearl White, or even something off the wall like yellow or orange. let me know what you think.

That's a cool blue, I like it. Personally, I'm not one for stripes.

I have always wondered what the Niner would look like if the tank was stripped/polished and then clear coated. Not a chrome like polish but a somewhat dull polish like the early Cafe Racers. I would worry though that sometime later a bit of tarnish or a fingerprint or something would appear under the clear?

The Blue and White is a classic look.

If you like the Orage try Blue with it.

They are almost oppossite each other on the color wheel yet work great together.
At leas it has on the moutain bikes I have built for a couple of friends.

Good luck

there is a Harley locally that someone stripped as you are describing, then partialy painted, leaving parts of the metal exposed, then clearcoated, looks absolutely awesome... problem with the 9 is the fender and seat cowl are plastic. I do like the orange of the Triumph, but hadn't even considered the Indigo w/o the stripe... I appreciate the suggestions, keep 'em coming.

Ya, you would almost have to go black (neutral) with the cowl and fender to make the bare tank work.

Shelby scheme will look awesome...so will a pearlized bone white with a shelby stripe in charcoal with a fine red pinstripe right on the edge of the wider stripe. I was toying with the idea of using that carbon-effect vinyl sticker as the accent stripe against white, clear coat over everything.

Go for the intense orange or yellow so that I can see what they look like! I have no intention of painting mine any time soon, but if I did it might be either of those.

By the way the blue with white racing stripes is originally the colors of American entries into the 24 hrs of lemans.

I like your idea of colors. Orange and white have been done. Go with the shelby colors.

initial idea was to cover the top of the tank in white out to the ridge, now I'm leaning towards exactly matching the width of the strip on the front fender, maybe with two .25" pinstrips on each side of the middle stripe. Just got the rear cowl off and completely dismantled, fixing to disconnect the fuel lines and take the tank off, had to come in and cool off. anything special I need to know before I start removing lines?

Colors sound nice. Should lokk nice and totally unlike any other 919.

Do you have another bike to ride while it's in pieces? I might do something like that as a winter project.

I have a DR650, and have a PC800 here at the hacienda that I'm trying to sell for a friend... it's 100+ with no break in sight, so I'd rather knock it out now and be able to ride through the fall and winter, the best times to ride the Ozarks.

tank off! that was kind of a PITA... three questions:

any best way to remove the two rubber grommets at the back of the tank w/o tearing them up?

there was a sensor going up into the tank from the sending unit, assuming that is the low fuel sensor... as that supposed to be connected when I reassemble?

and would you paint the rear hugger and side panels to match the tank, ot leave them black?

Just push the rubbers out by hand. They won't tear. I did my hugger/chain guard. I didn't do the side panels, thought it would be too much. I am glad I did it that way. Not sure what you are asking about the sensor in the tank. Mine all came out as one piece. When bolting the fuel pump back on. Be careful, very careful. The nuts don't go on very tight. The bolts snap off easily.

mine came out as one piece as well, was just curious where or if it just lay in the tank, as it didn't appear to be attached anywhere... i'm going to check out a scematic on bikebandit.com... tomorrow night the front fender and then I start prepping to paint. shweettt.

Shelby Colors!!!

I am thinking about Aberdeen Green. Same color as my '07 Honda Ridgeline. But the red looks damn good when it is clean. These afternoon rides home in the rain prevent that from happening.

Here is one in bright orange with painted side covers. Too bad they didn't put full-size decals on the tank.

I wasn't sure about painting the side covers, but this one convinced me.

after seeing the orange bike, may have to shoot the side panels on mine with the Indigo as well...

started sanding the rear cowl tonight, will work on the small dents in the tank tomorrow night; i'm like a little kid about to pee my pants.

also, considering these stickers for the tank, kinda retro...

no, stick with black or ghost them, both will look sick!

and i disagree with rickard, get it done in black, not the same color as the rest of the bike. same goes for the airbox/throttle covers, get them done in black as well to help break up the color a bit.

what do you mean by "ghost" them? I was considering painting the grab rail, but I don't use it that much as I usually run a SW Motech rack and Shad topcase. airbox/throttle covers in black is a definite possibility, could even rattle can them later.

get em powdercoated, looks better and lasts longer. dont ask me how i know

a ghost decal is where it is in either white, silver, gray, or black depending on your paint color and is almost transparent. looks really sick. having a hard time finding a good example via a quick search but check it out. a ghost decal or black gets my vote.

I had a brain fart about the ghost business; I had originally thought of painting the tank flat black, then paint gloss black stripes under clearcoat... Still sounds appealing.

When you put the fuel pump back in, be careful to get the sensor below the overflow tube that runs through the tank. Otherwise, you think it's all back together, fill it up with gas and ride 20 miles to see the low fuel light come on (SHIT!). There is a tube that runs through the tank and it's possible (I proved it) to have the sensor rod go above the tube and then it doesn't rest on the bottom of the tank as it should.

I say do the hugger and side panels. This is mine, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

EDIT 1
I should say, do "something" with them. I like mine color matched, but maybe with yours you could go with white to match the stripe or something.

EDIT2
Oh yeah, I'm for the shelby blue and the stripe, it will look bad ass! Same with the decals.

i am thinking of painting this winter too. I was first going to go with gloss black with a white racing stripe...with red decals, now learning towards pearl white, no stripe, red decals, and carbon fiber fender and side covers. I loved white on my F4i... anxious to see pics.

I think I would get tired of the orange...
