Evel Knievel Dead..

Evel Knievel Dies, 69

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) -- Evel Knievel, the hard-living motorcycle daredevil whose exploits made him an international icon in the 1970s, died Friday. He was 69.

Knievel's death was confirmed by his granddaughter, Krysten Knievel. He had been in failing health for years, suffering from diabetes and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable condition that scarred his lungs.

Knievel had undergone a liver transplant in 1999 after nearly dying of hepatitis C, likely contracted through a blood transfusion after one of his bone-shattering spills.

Very sad. Strong memories of sweaty palms watching him jump on ABC's Wide World of Sports when I was a kid. He was a god back then. Even if he did ride a Harley

Always was and is still a God.

Guys gotta have nuts like church bells!

I've heard stories of him golfing out in Vegas for some pretty high stakes... loved the action. And had run up against a few guys who tried to swindle him out of a large sum out on the course. He played along until on 18 he goes to his car and rather than pull out the cash... brings out a gun. Tells the sad sack of sh!ts that if they want their cash he will be waiting for them out in the desert... they come come and get it.

From what I know... true story.

OUCH - hard to believe even that little ago.. they had no idea what safety really was. As long as a firetruck was nearby.... we are good to go!

You think some X Games kid would recreate that and jump it nowadays?!

Bummer... He rocked.
I had all his toys when I was 7.
I still remember grinding my knuckles, winding up the motorcycle, to send him off a jump.

Today... Some X game kid will probably back flip that jump.

Yeah, I remember watching him as a kid in the 70's.
I'm sure he played a big part in why those of us who grew up in that era ride.

I plan to die young, as late as possible.

I want that wind-up toy again ... I bet it will not sell for a small fortune?! My friend Scott at the time had the stunt truck. I was so envious of him. He was the rich kid in our poor neighborhood.

Just finished watching the History Channel bio. Damn - talk about memories! That's definitely a primo show. My Dad (dirt tracker) used to make a HUGE deal about Evel's jumps on Wide World of Sports.

To this day I find it interesting that Evel always jumped a flat-track Harley. Definitely old school.

Robbie seems to have it figured out with the Honda CR500.

I was working graveyard at a print shop here in '94 and a dude came in with one of the "wind-up-Evels". We shut down the press to play with it most of the night!

The one thing I remember is how it NEVER broke!

R.I.P. Evel Knievel! You are definitely a true USA bad ass!

Where was the extra seat for his big brass balls?

Thanks for the brain rattle there Royal

After watching several Metzger vids on YouTube this weekend I have to agree that he is definitely The Godfather!

Evel = Evel

Metzger = The Godfather

Damn, old school vs. new school.

Hmmm...

Metzger is the undisputed Caesar's King by a few lengths for sure!

On top of feeling bad for his family and all those he's impacted over the years, I also feel bad for the editors of Maxim magazine right now...

This is an article from the issue that just hits newstands last week.

Evel jumped on a Triumph before the HD so you have to cut him some slack on that.

I think of the new kids, Pastrana is the best. No one can touch his double backflip.

Great memories. I remember whining to get to watch the jumps on tv. Even my father was hooked after the first one. That wind up toy entertained me more than any other I can remember. Maybe it's gone the way of the lawn dart... a 30 mile an hour 3lb. projectile, sounds like lawyer bait to me. Jump in peace Evel.

If his chute hadn't "malfunctioned" we would have lost him thirty years ago! I watched it! He was nuts doing wild stunts on old, lousy equipment. Broke too many bones in his body, so he must have been in horrible pain.

RIP EVEL! You paid the ultimate price to capture our imagination!

Mr. Knievel was (1) a showman in a field of idiots, and (2) a showman in a field of the gullible (which IS different). To wit:

(1) Prior to Mr. Knievel's appearance motorcycle jumpers were a dime a dozen; any county fair or carnival had one or more; typically they worked for beer money and nothing else. Like Mohammed Ali in boxing, he single-handedly transformed the genre to include spectacle, pomp and big bucks.

(2) He would pay everything by check. His checks were printed with gold leaf in the hopes that the recipient would never cash a check so luxurious and from such a celebrity. He figured hundreds of thousands in "savings".

Rest in Peace, sir.

Clinton

I have a friend in Clearwater that used to see Evel out in the bars, evidently he wasn't the nicest guy in his later years. I sure loved him when I was a kid though, baddest daredevil ever! My mom wasn't thrilled with me jumping over little homemade ramps on my mini bike, but hey, if Evel could do it...
