Craigslist help...

Hey all, I've relisted my 919 on Craigslist for good this time but I seem to have run into a snag...

I recieved a few responses within 2 days so that is a good thing, but here is what I think may be the bad... and honestly I think I just may be a moron.

I recieved this email from this addy : Gibbs.Ronnie_9866 <[email protected]>
Hello! I am Gibbs.Ronnie_9866 . When can I come and see it? Thank you.
txztb naglovbhf rkcsdy lncpp sjaz nsspjuc apft
xroepl jexzaeh bmyilvk hjrkdfsa qzwczc oagba xq

I responded with this:

Jason or Ronnie,

Not sure which one it is, the bike is available but your email came across
which a lot of weird characters at the bottom so that has me a little confused.
Regards
Mark

Not long afterwords I recieved this email.

From: Craigslist <[email protected]>
Subject: Reactivate your Craigslist account Re:2003 Honda 9191429

Please update your account to avoid expiration:
Account

Like a frigging moron I followed the link and did what it said (dear God MAJOR brainfart)

After I did it I realized wtf did I just do!!! So I contacted Craigslist with all the info including emails and addresses...thank God that it's just a Craigslist acct but how badly do you think I f'ed this one up?

I'm generally VERY attentive but I think I FUBARED this one...

did you immeidately go back to craigslist (using the address bar, not a link) and change your password to something else? If not, go do it now.

Immediately run a FULL virus scan and then review your firewall log to see if ANYTHING you don't recognize tried to come in or did make it in to your computer during that time.

Most of those are a Man-in-the-middle attack and are just trying to get your account name and password (why Craigs list I have no clue) but some can take you to a fraudulent website and either put a worm, trojan or on the computer. If it is a rootkit......your Fed. You won't know until your computer just stops working. I would back up music and photos right away.

Luckily at work I have no music, photos, videos ect...no personal things whatsoever and no links to my home computers either.

This is only the second time ever that I've used Craigslist but at the same time it was a half awake moronic mistake nonetheless.

One other thing to consider is changing other passwords on other accounts. If you're like 99% of the world's population (and 99% of people are), then you use the same password for multiple sites. If they got to your CL account, can they see your home email address? If they can, and you use the same password, then they now have access there as well. I don't post on CL, so I have no idea how it handles account stuff...

Nope luckily I don't use my home email for Craigslist so they won't see it, and the things that are linked to my work address aren't really important (thank God) so hopefully nothing bad will come of it.

I was able to change my CL password and it is not the same one used for my home email either.

Agreed, it all sounds odd. I guess he will insert the scam later with some request for some money to "help" with some problem with his end of the transaction.

He's going to make the payment through paypal on a stolen/bogus credit card. His "agent" picks up the bike. Credit card company recognizes fraud and cancels transaction. You wind up with no bike and no money. Easy as that.

Only sell on CL in person and in cash. Simple as that.

THIS. These two simple rules will save you many headaches.

I also put a note in my CL ads to include a LOCAL phone number if emailing me. No number? -- Then right in the spam folder...

yeah thats a bad idea so i disagree with toast there, sorry. i say bad idea because then you basically filter out the people who dont use phones such as me, OR you set it up so where a deaf individual gives you the 800 relay number that is attached to their local number and the person thinks its spam/telemarketers and dont call.

just abide by the best rule said here, deal with local and cash only, and you'll do just fine.

edit: oh and dont meet at your place if you can help it!

I assume a deaf individual would mention that in their response and hope they would email to confirm and go from there.

I agree with Pvster. DO NOT MEET AT YOUR HOUSE!!! I chose to meet people at a police station. I don't tell them I just give them the address. That way no funny business will go down. And if they are good people then they will feel safe too.

I heard of a couple of bike thefts in my city this year where the bike was listed for sale. In one case someone got the address (condo parking garage) for a showing but didn't come and the seller didn't get the potential buyers information.
