Arrow Calling SoCal riders

Trying to see how many people are interested in going for a ride sometime over Christmas and New Years. Walked outside today and it was absolutely beautiful. Gave XRMikey a call to see what he thought. Looks like we are in a great weather pattern right now so going to take a shot at getting a ride together.

Anyone interested? I'll send PM's to as many people as I can think of.

But in the meantime I'm heading out. Way too nice a day to sit around the house or go shopping (not a dig mikey!).

Yeah, my wife actually said the same thing. I got about 150 in today. Found a cool deserted road between 371 and Hemet. It was a nice ride. Took a couple pics I'll post later.

How about Sat then? New Years weekend. Sunday is out for me since my wife reminded me we have a football party that day.

Oh, and my career as a weather man isn't going to work out. Looks like rain off and on thru the Holidays.

Thanks for posting these Sugs. One of these days my schedule will work out to get down there and tag along. I am working the next couple of weekends and busy with family stuff most of the rest of time. But keep posting up when you are doing these and I will get down there someday.

No problem SoCal919, looking forward to the day you and a few others in socal can make it.

One of the main reasons I joined WT. To find other guys who actually like to ride their bikes, as opposed to the Sunday ride to Starbucks to BS and admire how shiney each others bike is.

Anyone who wants to come is welcome, just jump in!

I'd really like to do this once a month, something to schedule and look forward too.

OK. How about every other Saturday & then every other Saturday in between that. Then maybe a Sunday Morning ride on the alternating weekend's.
Sound good?

I could probably hit a few of those until work cranks back up. I hopefully havea couple of open months left before that happens though. Saturday should be good for me. Where and what time?

Well, phobman suggested a very twisty road that starts somewhere on ortega and goes through the avocado groves and ends up in temecula near old town. Would need his buddy to lead the way though as I took a look at it and lots of potential to get lost, side roads everywhere.

I've been wanting to ride through Joshua tree national park for a while now, starting at the south entrance off the 10 freeway. Climbs from the desert up to to the town of Joshua tree. Beautiful road and scenery. Would be long ride though. Not sure what everyone is up for. I was thinking to stay out of the high mtn's, Julian, Palomar and Idyllwild have snow.

I'm open for suggestions if anyone has a better idea.

Here is a suggested route I did on google maps. Temecula to Temecula. Please edit or change at will. 315 miles and I'm no iron butt.

Just noticed the route is wrong in Joshua tree. Turn left at waypoint "D", instead of straight on to twentynine palms.

And I must reiterate, this is just a suggestion. There are many ways to shorten the route. Please add your suggestions. Phobman? Stiggy8?

I do appreciate your enthusiasm though mikey! I knew you'd be up for it!

We can always come back through the "crash site" & back on 74 if the lower route is putting on too many stock seat miles.

Hmmm...What about Angeles Crest Hwy? I heard it was open now. Almost hundred mile shorter route. I wonder what the altitude is on that road.

Just checked Wikipedia, summit of 7,903 feet.
Also says not open yet.

Maybe save that one for summer!

As long as the weather is good... should be a nice ride. Would be good to see how my sargent seat will handle the 6+ hours. I'm game... as long as we have a few stops to reset the weary hindsides!

Thanks for doing the research Sugs.

Angeles Forest Highway is a marvelous piece of road, but gets crashingly boring as soon as it gets to the high desert. Trust me on this.

Two alternatives: Follow along with Google Maps if you can.
The bottom of Mt. Baldy road to Baldy village, then on to Glendora Ridge Road for a long scratch on the unlined road alternating from 30 MPH switchbacks to 130 MPH sweepers until going on to Glendora Mountain road and down the front side -- generally cleaner and faster overall, with some of the best scenery in the business. Stop at the picnic area just up from Glendora to bunch up again. Now back up GMR, but continuing down the back side to the East fork of Azusa Canyon, then down to Azusa. About 60 miles of unrelentingly challenging twisties with over 300 corners over the whole ride. Tight, technical, and where I learned to ride properly, but more of an early summer ride to let the higher parts of the Ridge Road thaw out.
The fastest I've gone on GMR is 119 MPH radar clocked by 2 off duty CHP motor officers on my home built XT500 cafe racer (see avatar).

----Or -----
The Albertson's parking lot (to provision up) on Las Virgines Road and the 101, to Piuma Road, to Scheuren Road, down Stunt Road to Mulholland, then on to Dry Canyon Cold Creek Road, back on Mulholland, to Old Topanga Canyon Road, to Topanga Canyon Blvd for a short distance to the multiple hairpins of Fernwood Pacific Drive, to Tuna Canyon Road which becomes a tight evil narrow one way road all the way down to PCH that you can hit 80 on if you're good. Go west on PCH to Latigo Canyon Road, to Kanan Road, to Encinal Canyon Road back to PCH, West to Mulholland, then all the way back to Las Virgines Road, stopping at my cousin's artist enclave in the Malibu Hills along the way, then on to a wonderful Mexican seafood restaurant in Calabasas. Not really that long a ride in the grand scheme of things, but you will certainly know you've been on A RIDE! Actually, there are dozens of permutations possible in this area, and I've spent the entire day canyon carving without duplicating any roads but PCH and Mulholland.
The fastest I've gone on this ride is 131 MPH on my 919 while out accelerating a Ferrari on Mulholland.

Wadda ya think?

Rob

Whew! How's that for a 400th post?

If it has already been done, it is safe to assume it is possible to do it.
On the other hand, if it has not been done never assume it is impossible to do it.

Checked them out on google. Both look like fun Rob. I think you would have to lead the one in the Malibu hills though as I know we would all get lost!

I'd be happy to guide, but getting lost around here is a big part of the fun! If you're interested, I'm on Christmas break until the 2nd, and all my obligations will be taken care of by Wednesday night. Keep in mind that the geology in this area is primarily partially consolidated sandstone, so in the rainy season (the last front that blew through here dropped 4 inches in 16 hours) exfoliation deposits rocks and sand on the road that hasn't the good grace to be a different color from the asphalt, but you get pretty good at spotting it after a time. Let me know if you're interested.
