I'm thinking of a thin windbreaker that would go over my MC jacket. I use an XXL with all the padding, so the windbreaker would have to be pretty large to be able to slip over the jacket.
basically I'm looking for something to break the draft for evening rides as the weather cools down to mid 50's or so.
Don't need anything fancy or expensive, I'd like it to be easy to slip over a jacket, so maybe expanding sleeves or something. Safety colors would be nice too.
I go the opposite direction for cool/cold weather. I go underneath my gear.
First pic is my summer gear. Jacket is vented with a wind liner that zips in.
When the temp drops I use thin-ish (but quality insulating) base layers (have two different sets/thicknesses of each piece, depending on temps), second pic.
I agree that under the jacket is best. For 50's I use summer gear and wear a wind shirt to cut the draft. The current one I use is from Duluth Trading. It doesn't need to be pricey...
Anything under 50 I go to an unvented jacket.
I was thinking that over the jacket would simply keep out the wind and keep the body heat in much more. The big problem I have is that the wind blows thru my mesh jacket's zippered in insulated lining. My old Joe Rocket had a non-insulated that stopped the wind, this one doesn't really stop the wind.
Maybe a ski type sweater or insulated shirt would do the trick.
Yeah, I carry an old rain and wind-proof jacket that I bought in my off-road days - it stuffs into a small space. It's just a single skin, but because it fitted over off-road protective gear, it's large enough to zip up over road gear too.
I don't have this one, but it's along these lines.
For cold riding, I simply use a windproof/waterproof sweatshirt, my heated jacket liner, and a t-shirt. It was in the teens a few weeks back and I was hot and toasty. Can't beat heated gear
Fair warning, if you do decent speeds, you'll eventually tear the seams out of Frog Togs or similar. I would wear one of those jackets over a perf'd airbag jacket, and it was definitely warmer, but eventually the seams around the upper arms started to shred. Going under is easier for sure, and at some point I'll probably spring for an airbag'd WP jacket.
If you get the Frogg Togg Dri-Pore fabric (found on their Pilot lines), it won't tear. It's more expensive, but you can ride through a hurricane and come out dry.
Our company gave us Frogg Togg Pilot jackets as a Christmas gift. That Dri-Pore 2 material is insane. I thought about buying some matching bibs for rain gear, but it does NOT pack down as tightly as their other stuff. Besides... I doubt I'll be riding through any torrential downpours.
But yeah... just a cheap rain jacket will stop all the wind.
