Anyone own a drag bike?

I was a pretty dedicated drag racer of cars for about 10 years.
Time has gone by as it does and I started to get the itch for it again.

A full pro drag car can cost 6 figures easy. It seems to me I could have a less competitive bike run in the 9's all day long and it would be pretty cheap comparatively.

Any thoughts?

Considering you can get into a liter bike or larger for less than 7k used, that is nearly all you need. While I don't have any specific info, it seems that if you aren't in the 9s for under 10k, you're doing something wrong.

Any of the Busa's will run in the high 9's stock. Strap them down and they run mid 9's. The ZX14 are about equal stock and the clutches have been shown to hold up really well. Both bikes are WAY easier to drag race than the literbikes, given the extra length.

The local 1/8 mile track opens here in a few weeks.

Now I'm running a vintage CB750, bone stock, nearly free, plenty of fun.

You've got a bazillion options.

Have fun!

After just 2 trips to the track I got my 900RR with XX motor down to 6.14 @114mph with just a 1.50 60ft. With a little more seat time and getting used to the clutch it'll go in 6.0's with ease. That'd put it in the low 9's easily (and I'm not done tuning it either). That's a bone stock motor. What other guys said is true...Busas and 14's will go mid 9's pretty easily and are easier to launch due to more torque. Liter bikes will do it also but are harder to launch (my buddy's bone stock motor'd cbr1000rr ran a 5.93 in 1/8th). It all depends on which route you want to take. I have a small fortune tied up in mine over last 8 years. If I knew then what I know now it'd be a fourth that. Get a used newer bike for around 6-7 grand. Or get you an old one like mine and transplant another motor into it (which is more fun if you ask me). You should see the faces of the stretched Busa owners I've whooped last couple of weeks.

XX motor in a 900 frame...Come get some.

I spent the day at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals watching qualifying and testing.

4 WIDE! Bikes racing 4 wide. Holy Crap.

I saw the 4 wide racing at Charlotte on Pinks a while back. From the view of an old school cage racer it looked and sounded wild!

Just watched a couple of the videos from the link. I bet the 4x top fuel or funny car sound was unbelievable in person. And the bikes had to sound crazy as well.

Sorry for the derail - had to comment!

Yeah, they gave the Suzuki's 100 cc's or so back and the Harley's are still running with them. Those screwheads were sandbagging all along. Anytime you have to make concessions for a manufacturer to compete, it's gonna be screwed up!!! EQUAL CC's and let the chips fall where they may!! (friggin harley's)

I was thinking 12-15k for a bike, trailer and a season of racing whic is a pretty tight budget. I'll have to start looking this year to run next year.

Anyway keep the suggestions coming- with the wife being pregnant I need to keep it within reason.

Any 1000+ cc four will run 9s with a good setup. Exteendd the swingarm, lower it, strap the front and you will be haulin' ass. And you an get an older 1000 for 5k no problem. That leavs 10k left for a trailer and the swing arm.

I don't think that is a tight budget at all. Unless your going to run for championship points and buy new tires every weekend and run crazy expensive fuels blah blah blah.

12-15K is WAAAY more than enough. Stay true to your brand and get a Honda. I'm familiar with every one of them as far as dragracing goes. Go with a Blackbird. The 900RR's will cost a ton to go fast and you'll spend a fortune repairing #3 rod journals on cranks. Plus they are harder to launch as is the 929's, 954's and the 100RR's. Buy one already set up for dragracing. Airshifter, electronics, swingarms, etc. will cost small fortune. You can get one in the 6K range pretty easily. Just last year there was one running high 8's in 1/4 for 6500. Blackbirds are very easy to launch, parts are pretty cheap(comparatively speaking), and are dependable. I can find you one if you'd like. Been doing this since 97 so I've made a few connections along the way. Get a drag only bird for around 6-7K. I have a 6x10 enclosed trailer which is plenty for 1 bike operation. You can get used ones in 2500 range all day long. That leaves you PLENTY to buy a few spare parts and such.

On the TV show "Pinks" there was a race between a arrogant Harley VRod owner and an obsolete old Suzuki GS1100E.

That was a great episode!

Yeah, that was a great show. Ole GS was pushing maybe 70 horse stock and still whooped the crap outta the Vrod..I LOVED It. Did you see the one with Mike Slowe and Jason Miller running their turbo Busas? Like Mike said, they truly are the baddest street legal bikes on the planet. Only 60" wheelbase and still run in the 7's in 1/4. That's a great show if you ever get chance to watch it.

I met Mike Slowe at Cecil County dragstrip several years ago. He was busy messing with his clutch, nice guy, awesome motorcycle.

Have some pictures from that night somewhere......

imagine that

That show sucks! I can't stand the bickering. All I care about is whatss the vehicle got and how fast is it. DOn't care to see all the bickering and drama in between crap.

Now the other show. Pass Time, I could watch that indefinitly. Havn't seen an episode with bike yet.

Pass time has had a few bikes. Nothing really fast that I have seen. They did have a badazz turbo suzuki, but he didn't get a good pass. I "think" it was in low to mid 8s?? And yeah Pinks did suck with the bickering and sandbagging going on. Besides the bike episodes, I liked the lil turbo VW bug. I'm an avid aircooled vw fan and followed that build on another forum. Pass time had an all VW show, it was great!
