Planning on doing the Lake Michigan Loop

I've decided that this summer I want to do the loop around Lake Michigan with a couple friends. It'll probably be a long weekend with many stops to see the sights, not an endurance race around the Lake.

The rough plan now is:
Day 1 - depart Milwaukee heading north, stay overnight in Northern WI near the MI border with family.
Day 2 - east across the UP to the Mackinac Island area.
Day 3 - head south towards Muskegon and catch the Lake Express Ferry back to Milwaukee

Yes it's a short loop, but I've been through the tollway in chicago / gary plenty of times and don't care to ride through on my bike.

I'm open to any suggestions for places to stop and enjoy the sights in MI. I've seen alot of Wisconsin already, but have never been to Michigan's Lower Peninsula, and have only seen areas of the UP around Iron Mountain. Also, any ideas for places to stay after Day 2?

Duece - Welcome to the board...

Sounds like a dent trip. Upper Mich has some great scenery and roads. I have a group that does the entire loop every summer. I'll see if I can find one of his old routes and copy it here.

I LOVE Tig Bitties!

That would be awesome.

Obviously we won't get lost if we take major highways, but that's no fun. Any tips for some scenic country 2 lane twisties would be greatly appreciated.

One of, if not my favorite town on the lake in Michigan: http://www.charlevoixlodging.com/

The roads in and around the area (down to Cadillac) are great... HIGHLY recommend Charlevoix.
