2 feet of snow in the shade in my backyard still.
Trying to shovel the shit around so it melts faster.
Only took the 919 out once so far this year.
Getting some handguards so I can start riding
to work sooner. 20 mins of hwy, still pretty cold
in the morning.

"I live in Cali, screw freedom, give me sunlight."

Paul Mondor Frozen Butt Tour - YouTube

Sport Bikes - Ice Racing - From Cockpit - YouTube

So, in the midst of all this animosity toward winter, I'm curious. How low are you willing/equipped to go?

Personally, I have no experience riding on ice. The graceful swan dive I took over the bars as an ice patch took my bike out from under me doesn't count. Ice stops me cold but I'd be open to the notion of attempting to handle a light dirt bike with studded tires in such conditions. Given dry pavement, I actually prefer the cold, 30's, 20's - bring it on. I'm geared for it though, good thermals, boots, gloves, well insulated waterproof jacket & pants and of course electrics. The gear makes all the difference. I have ridden hours at sustained highway speeds in the low 20's and was not cold, not because I'm tough but because of my gear. However, a couple of weeks ago I made a 600 mile trip. I checked the weather at home and at my destination - high 50's to mid 60's - perfect I thought. I didn't count on 3 hours in the mid 40's in between - and I got cold - simply because I wasn't prepared.

So I'd like to know, how low can you go and what do you wear to get there?

How much would it be worth to have the ability to comfortably go lower?

Thoughts?

Its not the cold that bothers me...its mother effin ice and whiteout conditions that mess you up good and done. Plus add on a few inches of snow on top even with awd it gets creepy.

Got another two inches of snow the other day....possibly two more inches by sunday...

I seriously bought lotto tickets the other night hoping to win and move the eff outta here...

Im on my tablet, cursing the snow still...i didnt win: (

I may not have a lot to say but it doesn't mean I don't listen.

The lowest temp on the bike I've seen was 18 degrees and 80% humidity for a whopping 11mins at highway speeds.

Never again without heated gear.

But Im comfortable enough near 30 degrees with normal gloves, balaclava under helmet, long johns, jeans, a thick jacket and my actual riding jacket on top.

I like riding when possible in the cold...its got its own perks.

Well see how well I do 5 hours in 40 degrees on the way to Colorado tomorrow morning : )

Dude you're in Cali... what's to say you haven't died already, you just don't know it yet due to all the limited "freedoms"?

Nspd doesn't know any different since anything he could spend $$ on outside of his boat and 919 would be less fuel going into the tank of either one

10 min of freeway to 20 min of canyons and i get a view like this....3300ft vertical 3 mi away as the crow flies from the ocean leads to some awesome canyon riding..... Or i could be up skiing or surfing.... or hell lets do all three in the same day...

Dont be jealous... and dont worry ill post up a pic from the ride i will take on sunday in nice 75-80* Weather.

Don't worry nd4, I'm not jealous at all. I've already had some job offers from Cali, of which I promptly turned down.

I would be forced to turn in my CHL and can't obtain a Cali CHL, I'd be banned from buying certain gun (quite a list), I'd also have to register any gun I bought (goes into effect in Jan I believe), I'd also be limited some some types of ammo, household cleaners, vehicles, etc etc etc.

No thanks!

I have everything you have, minus the 24/7 nice weather, and I'd trade it in a heartbeat for someplace warmer and more stable weather (for my wife), and more freedoms. Oregon has been a nanny state for far too long, and they're fixin to get a lot worse.

It's isn't as nice here this year as it was last year, but the snow is gone and it was really nice the other day 22C (71 F) but it's usually around the 10-13C (low 50's F) in the days here.

And Florida doesn't count since they don't have real motorcycling roads

5oF on Christmas Eve 2008. No heated gear. We went 5 miles from my Father-in-law's house to his repair shop to meet the others. We spent another 2hrs just gettign warm again. Went another 10miles through Garden of The Gods to a little Mexican Breakfast cafe to eat. Spent another 2hrs there to ride the 10 miles home. That's a NEVER again! It got to a high of 12oF that day. I wasn't on the 919 for that ride but a Moto Guzzi Breva 750, so another naked.

From what I was told by the last FHP I asked there is no helmet law period if you're over 21 with $10,000 worth of life insurance.

Ever ask yourself what a subway sammich feels like when it goes into the toaster oven? Come ride in Texas during the heat of summer and twist your wrist to find out the answer... Still better than being a snowball though.
