Mark the Dragon...

Last minute decision Friday to meet James, Su & her gang down at Deal’s. Drove basically thru the night & met up w/ Su on 129… almost perfect timing. Get to cabin, unpack & unload, weather was perfect so some of us suited up & headed out. Or is that “oot” eh? Met up w/ James & all his Aprillia swag, did a couple runs & headed back for the night for food, drink & conversation. Sunday we rode thru Cherhala, James & I had a stern talking by Mr. officer, and more runs thru dragon. Monday, again perfect weather, hit the Foothills, up thru Smokie Mtn’s & more runs thru dragon… Now there’s a bit more to the story, but the short is Jim & I were riding the dragon while others had to go pick up one. So while Jim & I were riding dragon around 5-6 o’clock & nobody around but the locals, somewhere near mile 5 on the dragon I hear a weird noise, hit the next corner & hear it again only to realize I felt it with my right knee. You got it… both knees down for the first time on the dragon!!! So instead of getting bit by the dragon, I came away with leaving my mark on the dragon.

Yes, it is possible to tame a dragon. Congrats on getting your knees down Brian, now get your ass to a trackday, and do it the right way. We have one @ VIR on June 25th organized by the local shop if you are interested.

As for the weekend, it was an awesome trip. Last year, it rained on & off all weekend, and really made the riding not so enjoyable. I arrived on Saturday in Full sunshine, and 70 degrees. You could not have asked for better conditions.

Su and her crew of Canucks are some of the nicest guys I have met in a long time, and they all ride very well. As I pulled in to Fontana village, Brian and Moe were heading out to meet up with Bart. I pulled in, said my hellos to the rest of the crew, and got word they were going to catch up on some missed sleep.

Wasting no time, I unloaded the bike, donned my "Apriliaman" leathers, and took off to catch the other three. The ride over to the Dragon is almost as good as any other road in that area BTW. I got to the store, looked around and didn't see their bikes, so I headed up to the top. I didn't get more than a few hundred yards, and there comes Brian from the other way. I quickly give him the single-finger wave, and proceed to turn around.

Find out that Bart's motard has a flat, and we need to go get the others to pick him up in the truck. Back down the fun road to the cabin, wake up a grumpy Sporty, and Junior and thank jeebus we don't have to ride in the truck with them on the way back.

Back up the dragon to find Bart, as he is sitting in a turn with the most motards I have ever seen gathered in one place. Sit for awhile watching the cars try to tame the curves that bikes find so easily.

Bart loads up, and they head to Wheeler's for a new tube. Moe, Brian, and I decide to head to the lookout once more, and then go meet up with the rest at Wheeler's.

I'll let Brian continue..

James was definitely the Aprilia man, him and bike were so 'cute' together all matched up looking shiny and new, just like a damn newbie!

Brian, well you couldn't get the smile off his face when he finally touched down with his knee! He was supposed to leave Tuesday morning, packed the bike up only to turn around again, unload his bike and drag some more knee.

The weather was great in comparison to last year, not a drop of rain, sun the whole time and a cool breeze coming through the mountains. Roads were clean and there wasn't too many riders there during the week which made it even better. Every evening the guys would play with the locals going through the Dragon.

Oh and we did use the American guests as scapegoats for the local police! James and Brian got pulled over and when Moe got pinched, we sent Brian to check as Ontario plates (if you even had one on the bike....) stuck out like a sore thumb. We learned that National parks and their roads were better avoided as the Park Rangers weren't so lenient as the police.

Other then run-ins with the law and a flat tire, no one had any mishaps and went home sore from so much riding but all in one piece including the bikes. It was a smaller group this year but I think it worked to our advantage as we rode more, there wasn't so many of us to worry about and keep track of. Plus at night sitting around the cabin, we ate good meals and talked about the day's riding.

The first pic is of Brian, James, Bart and Moe sitting at the outlook at the Dragon.

Second pic is Junior, Bart, Smokey, Moe, me and Brian on one of our run-ins.

Third pic, bikes lined up in front of our cabin.

I would also like to add that James bike is the TRUE pig of the group!
I'll let James explain it!

One of these days, I WILL be lighter than Moe!

And that's all I will say about that.

Glad to hear everyone made it back home safe, I can't wait til we can ride again. I still think you should have bought that purse, it matched your leathers perfectly.

About three weeks ago, I was contacted regarding a trade. He wanted to take a trip to Alaska, and my V-Strom was exactly what he needed. Who was I to refuse a Tuono in trade?

That purse was hideous!
The only way I would carry that purse with me is if I filled it up with bricks and every so often swung it at you in your super-duper flashy Aprilia suit!

And no midwest, it wasn't the gas thing!
James actually got his bike weighed at Wheeler's (local bike store) and it weighed as much as a Goldwing......

I wouldn't say a goldwing, but she is a pig right now. New exhaust should dump about 20lbs.

The weight the manufacturers post in the specs is usually dry weight. If the tank was full, that might explain it.

I like the 'priller.

The pilot is a little iffy, but the bike is nice.

Was the Tuono more of a Pig than the RC51? That doesn't sound right, then again, That exahust system on the Touno is major bulk so you might be right James... dropping 20lbs on that Touno is an easy task.

I was also being chased down by both pigs (James and Brian) on Cherohola. The piggies couldn't catch me until I noticed this SUV coming towards me with pretty blue lights flashing. At first I thought "well isn't that pretty, some red-neck has put blue lights on his SUV even in the grill". Then it hit me, that's a REAL PIG, lights are blue in the US as opposed to red here in Canada. Gear down immediately and got off the throttle!
