Ideas for Skyline Dr

So I am taking a few days off near the end of Oct. and I was thinking of trailering down to Luray Va. and riding Skyline Drive and area.....

Any recommendations for places to stay in Luray?

Other then Skyline Dr, any other nice roads to see?

What kind of temps can I expect that time of year?..... from weather.com, looks like it will be quite chilly in the morning, with high's only in the 60's.....

Thanks Guys....

Rt 56 is great!
Simpson and I have camped on the parkway... made for getting some great pictures.

Basspiece is up that way... don't know your plans, but he can help out I am sure.

It's going to be chilly but not horrible. Probably high 40's to 50's ???

As far as roads...There are plenty out there...Just do some exploring.

Depending how far you ride down and if you get on to the Blue Ridge pkwy, you could check out RT56

If you are flexible about where to stay, there is a lodge in the park. I think it's called Skyland. The views are incredible if you get the right unit. There is also a decent restaurant and bar right there.

While we were staying there we had a bobcat walk right past us while we were sitting on our little balcony - cool.

Yes! I forgot all about Skyland. Yes, that is what it is called.

I haven't stayed there but have stopped in there when riding...Amazing view!

Might be worth looking into. May need a call ahead reservation though if you plan to stay there

No rooms at Skyland.....

and everything else in Luray looks a little edgy......

There is a Quality Inn right near Rt81, great reviews, and great prices..... but 23 miles from park entrance..... not too bad....

or, I can stay in Front Royal Va, at the top of Skyline Dr. , I know there are nice hotels there..... stayed at a Hampton Inn there a few years ago....

Understood actually. The idea of a trip costing only gas and food is appealing to me.
But I am only traveling from 4 hours away.

I camped along Skyline and Blue Ridge Parkway last month--so beautiful! Raccoons took my trail mix though, almost figured out the latches on the Givi Cases...
Bring yer long underwear and glove liners, and raingear of course.

Skyland looked like a pretty cool and well-situated place to stay, but didn't see any of the rooms. Skyline, like the BRP, runs along the top of the ridge, so any road going up or down off it is likely to be fun and twisty as hell, from my sampling.

Have fun!

I have had coffee and breakfast at Skyland.
It was nice...... but I was tired, maybe too tired to take it all in.
Bring clothes/shoes to hike in. You may want to see some waterfalls....
You are gonna hump it a mile or more to see them.
In Riding Boots...... well, it sucked.

+1
I had Chaco hiking sandals in my luggage--made those hikes to the waterfalls much nicer. Good to get off the bike and have a stroll in the woods from time to time, also.

You may also want to consider staying in WV. The Turf Motel has cheap rates and free steak/egg breakfast. You could also play the slots or watch a horse race if you are so inclined as Charles Town Races and Slots is right behind it. The Cliffside motel overlooks the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers at Harpers Ferry, not to mention cheap rates there as well. If you motor into the historic portion of Harpers Ferry, there is a small bakery and sweet shop with awesome cinnamon rolls and sticky buns. The Harpers Ferry Arsenal and John Brown's Fort are at the bottom of the hill.

Being that I am a slacker, I can not attest to the road, but my buddy loves Rte 33 between Harrisonburg, Va and Franklin, WV.

How'd the trip go??

I just toured WV & Va on the 919 and was happy to have had heated gear!! It was a little frosty in the morning. Plus deer, lots of deer.

Skyline Dr looks amazing! I was in Luray last year on my way to North Carolina. That one mountain road between there and 81 was cool, and Skyline looks about 100000X better.

Dont forget to check out the caverns as well if you've never seen them. It is really impressive.

In fact, I dont think I have ever been called that.....

I talk to Jason all the time on Facebook, in fact he is trying to get me into Dirt riding...... as he also is cutting down on his "sport" riding on the street.

Skyline Drive follows the top of the ridge. Pretty much any roads that intersect Skyline Drive are miles of twisties up/down to/from Skyline Drive. I would stay at Skyland then go down the mountain for dinner and such in town then back up to Skyland. Be sure to ask for a room with a view. The views are pretty awesome.

Another cool place is Hawk Mountain. It's a pretty short hike (~1 mile?) to the top. Great views and they release Peregrine falcons up there. If you hit the timing right, you can watch them flying around doing aerial acrobatics. Pretty cool.

If you can take some hiking gear with you and want to spend a day doing something more challenging, do the hike up Old Rag. There is plenty of info on line. It gets crowded on the weekends but if you can get an early start during the week, it's a great hike. I saw a bear there once. The top is like a maze of huge boulders. The trail is well marked.

Have fun.....................
