Columbus ohio- dest. Tail of dragon

Just want to throw out the invitation now for this upcoming July 4th. My two friends and I are leaving Columbus to arrive at tail of dragon on 4th of July. We will camp on the way down and back, we like minimal expense and all of us ride sport bikes so our daily riding range is only 400-600 in a day

We welcome any type of motorcycles to ride with us as long as your willing to run at our speed, usually 80-85 on the highway, nothing too crazy. Total trip will probably be 4 days as per our usual and we like to hit some of the other well ridden roads in the deals gap area while we're there.

Garage
If Columbus wasn't a 2 day ride from Minneapolis AND I didn't HATE driving through Chicago, this would be very tempting. I might have to run it by the old lady anyways...

If you're doing less than that on I-75 through TN and KY you'll be watching everyone else passing you. Doing that speed on I-71 from Columbus to Cincinnati over the July 4th weekend will easily get you a performance award from the Highway Patrol. I think they call that a "revenue weekend".

we're pretty good at not getting caught. Hasn't happened yet- Knock on wood.

It all depends on traffic and police of course.

I'm from Michigan...... Last spring rode the 919 over 1k miles over 2 days to the GAP.

We slabed it the 5 hours east to Zanesville, OH.....and rode the entire Triple Nickle (Route 555) down to West Virginia. We stayed in a hotel in a town right of the expressway/77 in Ripley, WV. (Trying to avoid traffic from any major towns.....it was a perfect place to stop)

The 2nd day was running south through West Virginia down through the Country Music Highway to Asheville (just pick a curvy road connecting the 2 - 98% of the roads are amazing).....then west into Robbinsville.

From Zanesville on......just beautiful, bad ass roads the entire way.....

Here's one of the routes.....we just headed south to Parkersburg....then south down 77 to Ripley, WV. Then back roads to Asheville.

Hi, I'm from E. Lansing, Mi and have ridden my 06 919 to the Dragon at least a half dozen times. Great fun and tons of other roads in the area well worth the time. One bit of advice, check that there are no rallies at the time that you are going as traffic will frustrate you. Especially if it's a slow bike or car get together. Have fun.

I love the back roads route down there. I never tried it put if I ever go down there again those are the routes I would take. Longer, but getting there would be much more fun than just screaming down 75.

I hope you are going down for the social aspect of deals gap. If so that will be a great weekend. If your going for the riding that is probably the last weekend I would go down there. It will be crowded. Lots of slow tourists.

I'd also recomend a track day if you are going down for just the sport riding. Scenery isn't as beutfull, but the riding is better. And sometimes cheaper.

555

Cycle World included 555 on its 10 Best Rides in the US a few years ago. I've done it on an XT500, a Harley FXR, an SR500, a BMW K1100RS and a Suzuki GSX1100G. I'll be adding the 919 to that list. Stretch out the Gap a bit and add more elevation changes and you have a fantastic ride. Next to no traffic too.

I'd be in for that trip. I'm from Cleveland and could visit for a few days before the Columbus meet. Camping for this cat is out though....I'm done with that.
I'll meet up with ya in the morning.

That'll work........

Don't forget that there are many other GREAT roads in Western NC. The Dragon will likely be jammed up that weekend and there are so many other rides that are as good or better. One of my favorites is the highway 276 to 215 loop around Brevard and Rosman. Awesome ride with some of the best scenery around!

When I die I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my grandfather did....not screaming in horror like the passengers in the backseat of his car.
