Better than the Dragon....

My boss has been telling me about a road better than the famed Tale of the Dragon. If you don't know, the Dragon is US 129 in Deals Gap, TN. It's 318 turns in 11 miles of road. It has great scenery and is a fun ride. The biggest problem with the Dragon is it's fame. Everyone goes... it's crowded... the police are everywhere... sports bikes passing you and making things generally dangerous.

So, my boss keeps telling me that he knows of a road that is better. Yesterday me and a few friends ride up and meet him in North Wilkesboro, NC. We then ride up to Marion, VA. We take 16 out of Marion and ride to Tazewell, VA. That's pronounced Tazwell. All I have to say is I think he's right. Instead of 11 miles, it's 30 miles, over three mountains, nice newly paved roads, no traffic, no cops, lots of switch backs and tight turns. It was amazing. I didn't get a turn count. There were too many.

The only drawbacks... there is not enough traffic to keep the road completely clean. In several of the corners there was lots of gravel wash out. It was easily seen and avoided but it was there. When we were there yesterday the roads were still wet. Made me a little nervous. I'm not a seasoned corner carver. I still have 1 inch chicken strips on my tires. I would love to get rid of them but I'm just not ready to push it there yet.

All in all it was a great ride. If you are any where near VA, this road is worth the trip.

Sorry, I have pics and tried to upload them last night but they were too big.

A friend took the pics from the back of her husbands bike and didn't really get any on the actual road. I know, but she was a little white knuckled and didn't get the camera out at that point.

Let me see if i can re size a few of them and post them up.

I have to envy the coasters. Seems like the midwest just gets screwed. There is a 7 mile stretch not too far from my house that has a couple dozen nice turns, but that's about it.

Another possibly good ride incorporating HWY 16 would be VA HWY 58E from Abingdon, VA to where it intersects HWY 16 then ride north to Tazewell. The stretch of 58 from Damascus, VA through Volney, VA has some nice curvature that made my GF thats from KS City, MO car sick

don't sweat the chicken strips. that's bs talk for pinheads with fat egos. you're smart not to push your luck. if you want to learn to lean way over and drag stuff try a few trackdays. nice find.

Spec, we rode from Tazewell over to Damascus. The roads through the valleys were incredible too. Big sweeping curves and some beautiful scenery.

There are some great roads up in that part of VA.

I can't hit Photobucket from work. They have it filtered. As soon as I get a chance I will try to post up some pics.

I have to ride an hour just to get to some curvy bits... I have yet to see a proper switchback here in the midwest... I miss the dragon something fierce!

Shaugh, meet me in Bedford sometime. We'll go down 450, when it's not flooded. Then 150 to French Lick and then 45 to 62 to 66. I'll show the only switch back i know of in Indiana, have a real good time doing it!

I'll have to remember that one. Sounds like a nice ride.

If any of you are on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville, you need to try Hwy 151 that goes from Enka up to the BRP. It's kinda short but it's one of my favorites. I usually ride it down off the parkway and then turn around and ride back up.

Also not too far from there is Hwy 215. North or south from BRP are both good. South is longer but north has less traffic.
