Hmmm... What should I wear ?!?!

So... the question is what should I wear that goes with my riding?

We sometimes say things like, "I only ride to the grocery store and back." Or... "I don't ride hard."

Well... I say this. Be prepared for anything. Have you ever seen an accident at 35 MPH or one at 65 MPH? The difference between the two is marginal at best. Trust me, I have been there.

I have dumped a bike at 90 MPH in a turn wearing short and cut-off gloves. I have dumped a bike at 30 MPH wearing full leathers and almost going off the edge of a cliff.

One thing I can tell you about all these accidents is that there is no such thing as a minor incident or accident on two wheels! No such thing people!

Here is my advice & suggestion:

Buy the best possible equipment you can afford. Think about it's function first and then it's form and aesthetics. Remember, it is supposed to save your life not just look pretty.

More to come...

Okay... where were we?

Please take a look at the following link. I borrowed this from someone on another site, just to emphasize the points I am making about attired.

Apart from ripping the rider and passenger apart for what they are wearing, please also take the time to look at the impact points a body experiences - especially when you look at the girl. Now you begin to understand protective gear design and why armour is where it is. The human being will typically fall in a semi-predictable state, it is usually initiated by survival instincts and natural reflexes.

In this series of pictures, the girls elbows, knees, forearm and palm take the initial brunt of the fall. Then - following trajectory of travel and momentum, she begins the inevitable roll and then she impacts her hips. Also, note how her ankle begins to twist and her wrist too.

So... when you look for gear, there are certain things to look for. I will address that in my next response.

Enjoy:

I must confess I did as h did today. With the heat index in central IL today, it's hotter than two lesbians in a sleeping bag so I'm in jeans, polo, gloves, boots and helmet.

Okay.. I do understand what it is like to ride in heat, and I too have been guilty of the same crime. Here is a suggestion:

jeans, polo, gloves, boots and helmet - Change to:

Jeans - Instead it could be Icon, or Dragging Jeans, or Bohn armour underneath or at least shin guards up to the knees.

Polo - Instead it could be Bohn armour underneath, or a vented non-leather jacket.

Boots - NO! Work boots don't prevent torsional twisting of the ankle in the event of an accident. And NO! The steel toes won't safe the feet it they hypernate or hyper extend. Instead - maybe a pair of SIDI street boots which have the look of regular shoes.

Helmet - Well... need I say more ?

I of course realize affordability is one thing, but as I said, seek the best within your given budget. NEVER have it at home and then wish you had worn it that day.

Mike.

Just today I saw a guy on an older Honda go by wearing nothing but a pair of shorts. That's it. Looked like he had just got out of the swimming pool. That's very common around here.

Hardly see any one wear proper gear around here. The most you ever see, even on sportbikes is a helmet/Jacket combo. The worst I hav seen recently was a guy I passed on a metric cruiser, Sandals, shorts, Tank top, He did have on a half helmet though, funniest part was the guy had most his finger up his nose digging for gold. Must of forgot he wasnt in his car and everyone can see him.

Mike.

I know I sang the praises of my phoenix 4 elsewhere, but I really can't say enough good stuff about it. I wear it ANYTIME I get on the bike, regardless of north carolina muggy heat. And honestly, if I'm moving, I seriously don't notice it at all. Same w/my icon jeans. The only place I slack on is boots. Not good, but true. So w/that said, can you post some links of good sites to find some boots like those? None of the shops around here have much of a selection of them. I'll say that my steel-toes did do a good job of protecting me, but I agree, as for twisting and whatnot, they won't do jack.

m.
