Almost had a Volkswagen Beetle for breakfast
NICE weather this week, so I rode to work this morning. Right at the end of the ride, I take a right to go to the front of the airport. This street passes by an unemployment/human services/deadbeat hangout center that is on the right, so I had my eyes open and my head up, looking for trouble.
Man, I got it.
Two people in a beat-up green 200X Beetle pulled out of the unemployment parking lot, in front of me. OK, there is room. I begin decelerating and cover the front brake. Thing is, the car starts driving up the wrong side of the road - my side. I grab a lot of brake, thinking "glad I practiced panic braking a couple of weeks ago". I hug the right side of my lane, and sure enough, the Volkswagen darts right at me, attempting to go back into the unemployment parking lot. As I come to a hard stop, eyes wide open, and front tire at the threshold (rear tire locked up at the end, unfortunately) the car swerves around me and ducks right in behind my rear wheel to pull into the parking lot, like I was a light pole or something.
The passenger turns around and looks at me with big, fearful eyes, and the driver points stiffly at his rear view mirror. I can only imagine the conversation in the car. As for me, I pointed strongly at the side of my helmet a couple of times, "THINK, DAMNIT!!!" and rode off.
Funny thing is, my heart rate never really went up that much, and I didn't get that red mist feeling. That's probably for the best.
I won't be going that way to work again - I'll stick with the side entrance, thanks.
