We think, though we can't be sure ourselves, that the illusion lies in not letting go of the staff and always setting up on loose stony ground. We think he has some sort of support that runs down his sleeve from the staff and then probably goes down and provides some sort of seat. We think he has some sort of metal plate or similar to counterbalance his weight, which the staff is firmly attached to. We think he buries this plate underneath loose stones.

But who knows ... perhaps he can really fly!
