My cousin hit a deer on his 600RR earlier this year only going about 45 MPH and it totaled the bike. He had on all gear except was wearing blue jeans. He ended up with quite a bit of rash on his left leg, a little bit were the pavement ground through the tips of his gloves, and he recently said his shoulder is bothering him.
Maybe the trick is to go fast enough to take advantage of the gyroscopic force of the wheels/tires....or to just cut it in half.
I was following another member here and he ran right over the back of a squirrel. His back tire sent that thing at least a few feet of the ground before it landed and drug itself across the road by it's front legs only.
