So Jac tells me last night that I can go out for a long bike ride if she can go out with her friends for the night. So I make plans with the guys on a PNW forum to meet up in Portland (2 hours away) to go on a really badass ride. I plan to wake up at 0730 so I can eat breakfast and get a shower and be refreshed to leave the house at 0830. Well, I ended up not waking up until 0830 and walk outside to see rain everywhere. I look over the mountain range and see some sun peeking through the clouds on the other side. I check the radar on the computer and everything looks good so I head out. I get out of the house at 0900 and prepare for the 2 hour ride to meet for KSU at 1100. I'm hauling ass and finally get over the mountain range to discover warm temps and a beautiful blue sky. I go to meet at the Starbucks I thought we were supposed to be meeting at and there is a Ducati Multistrada in the parking lot. No other bikes and the time is 1052. I figured everybody left when the Duc owner walks out and asks if I'm with the PNW group. I responded yes and he tells me they are meeting at the Starbucks by Barnes and Noble (across the street, literally). I get over there and meet with everyone and cuss about the stupid amount of Starbucks when someone points out that there is another one on the other side of the road. 3 Starbucks within one block, insane this place is.
We finally get going on our ride, and 15 minutes into it we have 3 people go down. Not a good sign. Luckily there were no injuries. We kept on riding and another goes down. I can completely understand why, you would not believe some of these roads. There were turns going downhill that I was trying to look through and couldn't turn my head far enough to see the end of the turn, the road almost went under itself.
Well we finally get into a good groove, then stop for lunch. After lunch and a bunch of bs, we start down a road with some long sweepers. We weren't going quick at all, thankfully because as I came around a corner (in the 4th bike position) I see a Land Rover coming at me sideways half in my lane. I swerve to the right and see him fishtailing everywhere in my mirrors. I turned around praying that he didn't hit one of the 8 people behind me and proceed to the crash site. The driver (a 16 year old boy in his dads new SUV) is out of the vehicle and shaken up pretty bad. The truck is sitting on the side of an embankment looking down at the river 20 ft below. The only thing holding it was a tree at the right rear quarter. The passenger in the front seat survived somehow I have no clue, and the passenger in the back ended up pinned in the seat. In the middle of nowhere, noone had cell reception so one of the guys hauled ass to the nearest store and called 911 while the rest of us directed traffic and conducted what first aid we could with our limited resources (I didn't bring the medical kit on this ride). The kids kept wanting to get up of course and we almost had to force them to stay still. Then the driver decides he wants to walk down the embankment and look at the damage to daddys truck. I kept yelling at him to move because it could slide down on top of him at any minute and he blew me off, so I said screw it then, let it fall on you and kill you. He walked up after that. The cops show up and just before they take over traffic duties a woman speeds by all of the stopped traffic and flys right by us at about 30 mph. She stops at the end of the traffic line from the other direction and gets out of her car and starts to yell at one of the cops for stopping traffic. They did an immediate sobriety test of her right there and she failed. I believe someone said they found drugs in her car also. I have pics of them taking her away in cuffs too. All in all a pretty eventful, but very fun day.
This is where I almost got taken out.
Couldn't decide which of these I liked better...lol
