RS Taichi

OK I can get the suit I rented for my last track day on Wednesday for $500.
It's GP-WRX R300; it was new before I used it.

Someone has it reserved for Tuesday; I can get it when he returns it.

I'm thinking about offering him $550 now.

Here it is:http://www.rs-taichi.com/main/nxl300red.jpg
What do y'all think?

if it rents for 500 why would they sell it for 550? Not saying they wont but sounds worth doing if they do! What does the resident leather dude think of that manufacture?

I think he is saying he can buy it for 500 after the next guy uses it, but is thinking about offering him 550 before the next guy rents it. Could be wrong tho.

OK Go ahead and me.

Let me rephrase that: I can get the suit I rented for my last track day for $500 on Wednesday.

It rented for $60 plus $10 for insurance. So I guess it's really costing me $620. It sells for $1100; wholesale is $750. So I'm sure it'll go for $500 when I get a Primus or NEX suit from the resident leather dude.

so in total you 620 is still less than his wholesale price... how is it possible that he would even be willing to sell the suite at a loss?

That's the wholesale price, not necessarily what he paid for it.
He might know someone at RS Taichi or their distributor. He's selling all the 08 stuff starting on October 1, I just made him the offer now. Hard to say no to cash nowadays.
Plus I lucked out and needed a size 54/44; the red one I liked happened to be new. BTW he called back and took the $550; I'm picking it up on Saturday.

I'll keep you posted on the rest of his inventory when he puts it up for sale.

Mike - What you got was a great suit at a great price. Personally, I am not the greatest fan of the aesthetics on some of the RS suits, but the one you got is an exception. RS Taichi suits used to be mainly custom made - they are certainly one of the top brands out there.

As far as why they might have sold it, not only was it a suit at cost, it was also acquired for rental - so had Mike not snapped it up, it would have made it cost in rental fees. However, the organizers did take care of Mike by letting him have it relatively new.

Good for you Mike. RS Taichi is just not a brand that sells a "name" at high cost, they put a lot of work into their products and like Veloce, they have a story to tell as well.

It was a great purchase.

It was between an RS Taichi, Spidi and a Dainese suit when I was shopping around... ended up with the Dainese but RS makes awesome stuff.

So they're superior to A*s; how would you rate them against Spidi and Dianese?

I really like the fit and finish. I read somewhere that they're 1.5 mm leather compared to 1.2 of other manufacturers.

Had to do a google search to get some answers.

They sell for $1100 and from what I gathered on other forums, quality is right up there with Dianese.

I think it's a good choice; not a fan of Spidi gear and didn't want to look like everyone else with an A*s suit.

If you go the RS-t direction, talk to the guys at Kneedraggers.com

Tell them you want a deal on it too.

I thought the fit and finish was up with Dainese. Something about the Dainese was just better though... just that little extra engineering in the ergonomics or something. Kind of depends on your body shape though. I'm not tubby American shaped so Dainese fits me.

It works like this:

Ku****ani and RS-Taichi are Asian equivalent to Dainese and SPIDI.

The guy who created SPIDI was actually partners with the original founder of Dainese - if you look back at earlier SPIDI designs, you would see the similarity to Dainese.

If broken down, Ku****ani is to Dainese as RS-Taichi is to SPIDI. Also, 1.2mm weight / thick leather is more of a European standard. Same leather as 1.4mm / 1.5mm, just thinner. No less abrasion strength, might just be a little weaker in shear or tear strength. 1.2mm thick leather is often referred to as race weight leather. I doubt RS-Taichi's leather is 1.5mm otherwise it would be as heavy and bulky as Bates Leathers - great suits, just a devil to break in.

The fit is great, a little on the loose side in the hip area and chest.
With the Bohn Pro Racer the chest is fine.

I tried on a size 52/42, the shoulder area restricted movement and I could hardly breathe.

I already got it on Saturday for $550.

Curious what the best price is on a new one.

Thanks for the reply :001_smile:

Thickness is 1.2mm.

I wore it yesterday for a few hours to break it in before the Superbike School on Sep. 20th.

Keep me posted on the progress of the Primus suit; I can put this on E-bay when it's time.
