MOTO GP leathers - Beware

One of our local racers just posted post crash pics of his MotoGP leathers... i'm assuming these are cow hide. He sustained some pretty nasty rash on his back side.

Yes, it does look like the cowhide suit. I really hate to chime in on this because it might mean me making disparaging comments about another manufacturer's wares.

Was this a hi-speed low side? How much sliding did he do if any? And also... do you know if he got caught on anything? I will in case you have these answers before saying more.

There's been a lot of talk about this. It seems to boil down to the very first MotoGp suits were very nice, and held up well. Then recently there was a change in construcion/material/mill and now they're blowing up like novelty condoms.

Well... first and most importantly, I hope he is okay... other than the road rash.

Danke - MotoGP (Berik) did not really change their materials as such. Designs changed a bit, and I do believe a lot of manufacturers pursued higher margins at less cost. Some of that resulted in weaker seams - as evidenced by what you call blowing up condoms. Sadly, I have heard this kind of complaint from coast to coast. I know of racers who actually hung up their MotoGP suits and bought other suits.

Next year will mark an important step for this line. It will be interesting to see what happens. One thing that is an issue is that if you are going to have seams in an area exposed to impact or major abrasion, you must or should make the seams at least triple stitch or with the main stitching hidding to avoid burning up. From what I can see in the pictures, the major seams failed on this suit. This was an issue Teknic addressed with their suits.

That seam in the crotch are should not fail or at least be one of the strongest seams.
