Helmet replacement after 5 years

Help me out with this one.

Does anyone here buy a new helmet every 5 years?

I seem to remember hearing somewhere that you should replace your helmet after it is 5 years old. What's the logic behind this? I can understand if you have bounced it off the ground or something, but do they just wear out and crumble one day.

Thoughts please.

Deterioration of the inside shell, I don't know if this is a true statement or just a skim from the manufacturers to sell you a new helmet but, seeing as to things don't last or are made like they used to, do you want to be the first one to have a helmet failed on you when you most need it?... therein lies the question
