Upgraded 22 years to a 919

Hi guys! I sold my 1981 Kawasaki CSR 650 two days ago, and today I bought a 2003 Honda 919. It's gonna suck to wait until spring to ride, but that means I have plenty of time to get it ready for spring.

Plans/Things it needs
It was dropped on its left side, and the stator cover took the brunt of it. I looked on eBay, but I didn't see any Honda branded ones. Anybody know where to get one and what the cover replacement process looks like?

It didn't come with the center stand, so I'll probably buy wheel stands for it.

I'm planning on removing the ugly fender conglomeration and getting an integrated LED tail light from CustomLED (https://www.customled.com/products/2...t-retrofit-kit)

Also open to suggestions for new front turn signals, as I think they look ridiculous.

I also want new mirrors and eventually bars, depends on how my budget feels.

Hey Isaiah. You bought a good old bike. I can't remember what that color was called.... Titanium, or Iron Nail, or some such thing. You don't see a 919 in that color, all that often.

Mirrors: I just roughed them up with sandpaper, then painted them Satin Black with Rustolium spray paint. They looked much better for not much money.

My handle bar was a Renthal, something or other.

Turn signals are only as ugly as you decide they are. I quit changing turn signals 14 years ago.

You don't have to answer, but I'm curious as to how much you paid for that, and the mileage.

Matte Bullet Metallic is the paint code color. It looks like a gunmetal/silver, but looks a lot darker in the photo. At first I was disappointed it wasn't asphalt or red, but I'm liking it more.

I think I'm going to go for some bar-ends. On my old bike, I had just one small round mirror on the left bar and that was enough for me.

I've heard a lot of buzz about Renthal, I'll have to check it out! I can't stand the chrome that is currently on it.

It was dropped on the left side so I gotta replace two anyway, they got pretty busted.

I paid $2000 (and a shotgun) for it, and it has just 20,300 miles.

Ah yes, it said that on the dealer tag but I didn't see that in paint codes online. Thanks!

Matte Bullet Metallic sounds a lot cooler. Depending on what shotgun went with the $2K, I think you got a deal.

I got the impression that you were on a budget, which is why I suggested painting the stock mirrors. Good bar end mirrors are expensive. But I think they're worth it. I can see better with them, and they do look good. If you ever go down tho, a bar end mirror would be a goner.

Chrome belongs on a Cadillac bumper, not on my handle bar. My 599 is gloss black, and I like the matte gold Renthal that I put on it. Take the time to drill for the locator pins.

Welcome. Nice ride. Love the colour, mines the same. I always called it Gun Metal Matt black. Don't know why I called it that?
I'm not a fan of the giant stock turn signals. Here's my solution. There's plenty of styles of led blinkers online. You'll have to change out the relay as well if you go led.
I flung that stock rear fender as well. I mocked up a temporary tail tidy out of checker plate aluminum. This will be replaced with a neater lower profile unit I'm working on. Also will fit similar led blinkers as front. Replaced the stock tailight/brake bulbs with brighter led flasher units. When brake is applied they first quickly flash several times before becoming steady.
Fitted Aprilia Shiver mirrors, well Thailand copies anyway. Much sleeker, more modern looking than the stock.
Have fun.

Maybe it's just the pic, but that rear tire looks really flat. By flat, I mean worn a LOT in the center such that it's not rounded like they are when they are new. This is usually because of a lot of freeway miles and it makes it jerk in and out of a lean instead of a smooth lean. I can't see much treat groove in the center.

Like those engine guards, need to get some thing for mine.

The tyre is getting down in the middle. I try and go hard around corners to help wear it more even. Even new it never had much tread in the middle. Pirelli Diablo Strada is the brand. I'll get another. It's never slipped. Also still feels smooth dropping in and out of corners, not jerky.

Partzilla have OEM alternator covers for sale.
https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/ho...ternator-cover
You might find a good one at a wreckers.
The cover on my bike had mild rash on it. I filled and sanded the scratches out. Painted it.
Replacement should be easy but there is oil behind it. Do it at an oil change. You made need a new gasket. Alternator is unbolted from the inside of the old cover.

Sweet, ordered the OEM cover and gasket. Mine's a total goner. It has 1k miles on the oil change, so I might just take it off and replace what oil spills out.

Yeah that a bad rash. Rest of the motor I could see looks clean for its age.
Glad you got it sorted. Good luck with swapping out.
