Should have done this a long time ago...

I joined months ago and for some reason just never did an introduction.
So here it goes...

I am 18 year old college Sophmore. My dad is a true wild hog and rides his V-star 1100 to and from work everyday, rain or shine. Its a 2004 with 50k miles on it. So he was my motivation to get a bike. My first one was one year ago. It was a 1984 Honda Ascot VT500 that I got for $300. It had been sitting in someones front lawn and had not been inspected or registered since 1996. Mom said "no absolutely you can not have a bike" so I trailored it to a friends house. Fixed it up and got it running like brand new, inspected, registered all the little details.

The Ascot --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opIlO7m5JWM

Then dad told her about it... She didn't talk to us for 2 weeks, and dad and I got real tired of TV dinners. Luckily she got over it eventually and I had my bike. February to June I put more than 3000miles on that little bike. Man I loved it! I rode that bike everywhere till June then I got my cue to upgrade was when I nearly got run down by a merging car, I decided it was time for a little more oommph.

I put my bike up on Craigslist and almost immediately sold it, 4 days and it was totally gone. I got $1100 for it and pocketed $500 after all my parts and the cost of the bike. That combined with a little graduation money and ALOT of hard work was just enough to buy myself a "new" bike.

I was busting my butt trying to figure out what bike I wanted. Mom was gunna kick me out if it had fairings but I wanted to be able to scoot! So I did my research and decided I wanted a FZ1 or a 919. I have a friend with a 919 and I got him to let me ride it and I was sold. I real quick convinced mom that it was a responsible bike and showed her how much the insurance would cost and had her finally say "fine, its your money" I was searching Craigslist and Ebay HARD, I was on every area's listing in Maryland, VA, WVA, Delaware, and NC for about two weeks.

One morning I woke up and found two bikes for sale in richmond, a 2003 with 14k miles and a dent in the tank for $3700 and a 2002 with 7400 miles for $4200. I quick called my dad at work and told him I was going, ran to the bank for the biggest withdrawl of my life and got my bosses work van. My friend and I got down there with the intention of looking at both bikes then buying the best one. I had gone about two weeks without a bike and I NEEDED one. We got to the first bike the '02 and we looked it over, I took it for a ride. I decided that I didn't even need to see the other one, this is the one I wanted. I got him down to $4075 and a cover, battery tender and some new brake pads and we were in the van on the way home.

We got home at the same time as my dad and he took it for a spin. He got back and said very seriously "its to fast, take it back." Then slowly cracked a smile and said "go put it in the Garage its starting to rain"

I ride everywhere, rain or shine. Unless there is snow or ice on the road I am riding. I totaled my car against a deer in October so the bike is all I have and that's the way I like it. I have put on 5400miles since I bought it.

Is there a better bike out there? A more complete bike? I can tear apart the posers on their 600's and I can cruise all day with my dad. People start to make fun of my stock mirrors, or ask why my pipes are so quiet compared to theirs. They never say another word after I offer to go riding with them and they see it in action.

This site rocks, endless information and brilliant mechanical and comedic minds. Always ready to help a kid learn. I have glanced through several other forums and I dont think there is another one out there like this one. People are treated with respect and there is an honest heartfelt desire to help. I am proud to consider myself a Wrist twister.

Thanks for reading!

What took you so long?

Great story, the best part was when your dad said "too fast, take it back" so seriously, your heart must have dropped for a second till he said "it's raining put it in the garage". He Gotcha!

Enjoy.

Very nice.

I just thought that I would add for those who do a lot of craigs list searching there is a page called crazedlist.org that you can search multiple areas in one search. If you use firefox you have to change a few things, the instructions are provided. This can save you a bit of typing and find more stuff quicker!

Great writeup. You have excellent manors to provide such a formal intro.

But I'm confused by your transition. On the clunky cruiser you share it with a super hot babe, but now on the awesome 9er you are solo. Did she give you the bike or me ultimatum? That was a very tough decision!

Welcome!

I know Barton... In the one overlooking the valley I had just taken my jacket off. And the other one... well I was practicing my wheelies on the street right in front of my house.

I don't know if she was gullible, I think she just knew she had to compromise. She said get a cruiser and I wanted a 919, so I told her I wanted a "crotch rocket" and she settled on the 9'er.
