My question is: is it really a tax credit, and not just a deduction? Credit would be much better!
Here's the thing: that's not clear! The shop definitely represented it as a rebate; that is, I could simply deduct it from my tax bill, and it would be like the sales tax hadn't happened.
But I was so baffled by the fact that nobody'd bothered to mention this incredibly good deal before that I did some googling, and I've seen it both ways.
Right now, I'm assuming it's just a deduction off my income.
That is, I'll get a percentage of the ~$700, according to my tax bracket, rather than the whole thing. When the time comes next spring, I'll ask my tax preparer. As it is, I can't blame the shop for misrepresenting, because (a) I'm sure they're not sure, either, and (b) I'd already bought the thing when they told me.
Also, the deduction starts to cut out over $120K/yr income, and by $135K/yr, it's gone, so if you're lucky enough to make that much money, you'll have to look to short Jessica Alba video clips for your stimulation.
