Noob from WA (Oz)

G'day all,

Glad to have found a Hornet's nest/haven.
I'm 43 and I'm very new to bikes and everything associated with them. Settled on a 919 (2005) with only 1800km on the clock and love it, but to be totally honest...I'm learning how to ride it!
I'm from the other end of the spectrum, that being the coach/truck world (my comfort zone).
Anyway, enough dribble; I'm currently (temporarily) driving cabs and my nickname is Hij (as in fridge) hence cabhij .

Cheers all,

Steve

Welcome Hij.

Just don't leave these guys any openings for upside down jokes, or woolly animal jokes, and you'll get on just fine.

And if you are really completely new to biking, stay away from the stories of fancy tricks and cunning stunts on the 900 - it's quite a bit of bike to get started on, IMO, and you want to be around the forum for a while...

Great stuff K1w1Boy - spot on from my new point of view - I'm going to crawl through my learning curve.

Welcome Hij..congrats on your new bike...enjoy it and a kiwi said take it easy for a while and enjoy, the 9'er has lots of power. I also started with the 9'er at age 45 and love it. It's a very easy bike to ride if you control your right hand.

Welcom Hij,

The experience that comes with maturity may help you restrain yourself... or not, lol.

The 919 is just fine to start out with as long as you can do this ^^ take your time learning how to ride well, and attend rider's training if you're able to.

Just remember, in any situation, it's never too soon to drop 10-20 mph/kph if you begin to feel a bit of concern about anything...it will buy you an extra second or two to figure out what's going on.

Hope you enjoy your new bike!

.

Well, fire the engines! Spur this iron space-pony on!

Hello CabHiJ, welcome to the forum and world of motorcycles! You've come to the right place for 919 knowledge. Enjoy your bike and after sticking around for awhile, you'll figure who the jokesters of the forum are. Well... a few have dropped by already.

Welcome to the forum! I just joined myself and have been riding a little over a year now (legally on the road). I had a Shadow 750 that I outgrew so I traded her for an '03 919.

My dad at the age of 47 recently took my bike for a ride and even though he is at 6'4 and 245lbs, he got the front end pretty light since he wasn't use to the power! The day I got my bike the guy's only words of wisdom were "Be careful. This bike is torquey as hell and has no problem throwing you on your back!" Ride safe and have fun!

Welcome!

I sold my 919 quite some time ago and wish I had it back. You will meet some great folks here that can help you with almost any question you may have about your bike.

You found the right place and the right bike.

When I die I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my grandfather did....not screaming in horror like the passengers in the backseat of his car.

He's in Perth, Western Australia. Check it out on a map or globe - I think it has the unusual position of being the city that is the most distant from any other city in the world.

But he might be able to tell you that when his timezone catches the sun....

Hello- I was just in Perth last week. Beautiful city, the mining rush has done quite a number on the local hotel availability. I stayed out at the Vines in Swan Valley. $50 for a cigar from Devlin's cigar in downtown was pretty steep too!

I did have a few good evenings at the Belgian Beer Cafe!

I expect to be in Perth once or twice a year for the forseeable future. Maybe I can buy you a pint next time I'm in. I live in Baltimore, Maryland USA.

You're on 919 - and I'll repay the favour and buy you a pint.
Unfortunately, we are booming and the prices are booming in tandem.

actually, what it really is, is that people are being downright nasty and has to get turned upside down before reaching you. in the process it becomes really "nice and fluffy" as what you're perceiving. so in other words: dont kid yourself....

just watch out for g00gl3it and you'll do just fine here. welcome and enjoy!

Yes I know, it's like that on many forums - but you have to feel them out eh?

Believe me, the PT forums are really toxic - this is like an aged-care facility by comparison and I say that in no derogatory manner at all - just nice to talk to "non-nerds" that are actually trying to communicate as normally/humanely as possible.

There are 'wads on every forum.

maan, you guys are funny -among other things- that head-up-arse thing is priceless!

Thanks all of you for your concern, I take it all on board quite seriously, as being really new to riding (with limited time at that) all of your advice is well taken note of.

Wife keeps saying it's gonna rust if you don't run it. I am so time-poor.

I'm booked in for a ride (group) on the 15th May.

Anyway, I'll get some pics up when I can.

Thanks everyone - keep the laffs a-comin'
