Almost a new owner...'03 919.. North Carolina

Hello, all. The nice people on the 919/Hornet Yahoo forum referred me over here to you for more info.
Here's my story. I purchased an 07 Suzuki in September. Had it one week, put 100 miles on it and it started blowing black smoke and running on one cylinder. Believe it or not, the dealer and the Zuk rep could not repair the bike. After weeks of being given the runaround, I retained a lawyer and the bike is being repurchased as a lemon.
Meanwhile, being the whiny bitch that I can be, I got the dealer to loan me a 919 that he had on the floor. Liked the bike so much (had it for 6 weeks now) that I told Suzuki that I don't want anything to do with them, I'm buying the Honda!
My dear husband has a GS and he has totally restored a 71 Honda MiniTrail 50 for my 12 year old.
So far, I love everything about the 919 except for the awful smell. Geez, I get off of it and smell like I have been working at a garage all day. What is up with that?
Anyway, I am in the Charlotte area, and hope to learn lots from your knowledgeable group....

Hello and welcome, glad to see another Charlotte area person in here! We're getting enough CLT 919'rs to have our own little motorcycle gang now...

LoL! That's great - interesting way to get an extended test drive!

That's Eau de Exhaust! I guess it's a man thing, but most of us don't mind it. If you do, there are some things you can do to get rid of it - search on 'stink' here and you'll find them

Welcome to the forum. It's a great group here and you are bound to enjoy your stay and learn lots in the process. Congrats on the new ride!

Thanks for the welcome.
My "lemon" Suzuki is a DL650. It had some type of intermittent wiring harness problem that they could not fix. (These are professionals?)
Because we live so close to the NC mountains, my husband and I ride the National Forestry roads alot. I've always had some type of dualsport and will probably get a used one this spring. But, most of my riding is around town and the 919 is perfect for that.
Blast on down to the grocery store, etc. (I need a rack or some type of storage besides a backpack).
Yeah, hubby is a BOB (Bastard on a BMW). He has an 06 Dakar. If he is nice, I let him borrow the 919.

Kahuna, yes, let's start a motorcycle gang in Charlotte. I always wanted to tell my Mom I was in one.

These people sell some different racks/bags for the 9er. The sport rack is small and you can get a small bag to go with it. Or you can get a large rack and bag for touring.

The good thing is it mounts where the grabrail is. Goes on/off in about 5 minutes.

Welcome! Just out of curiosity, how tall are you? Other females on the forum have made comments about the difficulty of riding the 919 due to seat height.

Wow, umm yeah. I've had my Strom for four months now, tripped 7,000 miles on a round trip ride from N.C. to Tampa, Fl and back without so much as a hiccup. Sounds like you truly got a lemon, which can happen to any Mfr. (yes even Honda for you red-winged truebloods).

Your dealership sounds like the weak link on this one, especially if you had to get a lawyer involved. If mine were having the same issues, I would be riding out w/ a new bike in a few hours. If you are still looking at dual sports for Fire road access, you would be hard pressed to find a better suited bike than a KLR. They are cheap durable fun from the reviews I have read. You might be challenged to flat-foot it, but @ 5'9", I think you could manage.

Welcome to the boards, and maybe i'll get to meet you and your husband on some of my western NC excursions.

You MUST have short legs! I am the same height, but I can sit on the 919 with both feet on the ground and my legs bent. Either that, or I have no torso.

I did run into one other 9'er here, goonanc. He lives in south Charlotte, although at last update his ride was out with electrical woes. Ran into him by accident at Caribou on East Blvd, then found out he posts here occasionally. Ajcombs is the other 9'er I've met in person, and he's kinda ok...

This weekend is supposed to be kinda decent, we should meet up somewhere, even if it's just for lunch or something. Anyone interested?

Welcome! You know, premium gas and the flapper mod have really helped with the exhaust smell for me. I think having the flap open at all rpms lets the engine breath more air and run a little leaner than the rich factory setting, plus it won't cost you anything to try it (except a few cents more per gallon).

For a start:
The dealer agreed to put on a set of new tires. They're going on the first week of January.
Got the original mirrors back from the last owner. They are going on today.
Don't know whether I will like them, but they have got to be better than what is on there now.

Asked for new grips and a rear rack for Christmas. We'll see what Santa brings....

I'll probably get a windshield.

What do y'all use to clean the stainless? Maybe I can talk hubby into cleaning the pipes :001_smile: He likes doing that kind of stuff.

BarKeepers Friend. Available at Kroger if you have those. Just make sure to use it in the direction of the brushing on the stock heat shields if that is what you are cleaning.
