The Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap

Would anyone be interested doing a small group ride here winter/spring? So far it's looking like 2 from Virginia Beach. No day is written in stone yet. Just wondering...

The Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap, with 318 curves in 11 miles, is America ’s number one motorcycle and sports car road. The nearby Cherohala Skyway is quickly becoming number two with its remote 60 miles of scenic mountain highway. The area also has other roads less traveled, but just as exciting.

A handful of the guys are out there every year.
Keep an eye out and you will see them post up when they are going.
Depending on the time, I am game.

I am going down there in May. I go every year, I figure that the second week in May works good because it's warm, and kids are still in school, and there isn't as many vacationers. Also it's before the Honda hoot, and all of the people from that, and it's before the fourth of July crowd.

I'm always good for a Dragon fest. Avoid the area in late winter early spring though. DOT is very generous with the salt sand mix they use. Makes for treacherous motorcycling in the area.
A trip in May would be great!

My screw up. I thought he said the 3rd of May. I'm in Mexico this week and weekend. I'll have a bike down at the company house by new years.

The training will be fun. About a 1-2 miles high. Check out the GPS (3240 meters, just over 2 miles high) and views.

I'd like to go next year, but it all depends on how much hell work is at the time. I could probably swing mid to late spring, but definitely not winter.

Three from Massachusetts were planning to arrive last week in April or the first week in May.... What is the best time, weather-wise, cops-wise, road-wise and traffic-wise?

Any weekday. Weekends are a zoo. Lots of crashes and lots of cops.

I live in TX too, and have realized that we have the anti-dragon here. Most roads in TX are 318 miles with 11 curves!! I have always wanted to go to the dragon. Will probably try to go in the next few years. I know my dad has been several times, and tries to go there during the later part of June to coincide with the Honda Hoot. Just happens to be my anniversary, so never went with him. I don't think my wife would like me to vacation without her at a bike rally for our anniversary. Then again, I wouldn't want to spend our anniversary without her, so I guess it works both ways.

Is April winter-free. In New England it is not. Then again, for the last couple of years (global warning, what's that?) april has been like June used to be... mosquitos 'n' everything!

As this first trip may turn out to be the last time (well, you never know!) it would be good to pick the best time weather-odds-wise.

Yes, but in snow and ice areas the roads still have sand/gravel on them. The worst thing about April is a higher chance of rain and thunderstorms. Outside of that, the temps are pretty nice.

By mid-May have the tourist Winnebagos arrived, choking the scenic roads or do they come later? In May you want to stay away from otherwise beautiful Maine and Nova Scotia as the blackflies will eat you alive. Is this also an issue at the Dragon's Tail? Thanks for all the help!

May is a nice time of year in the south.
Tourists and winnebagos are not a big problem on the dragon. On the weekends the dragon is covered up with every dumbass that thinks they know how to ride. Most of them get overwhelmed at the highly technical road and ride it at a snails pace. Many crash. When that happens the cops show up to work the wreck and then stick around the rest of the day and write speeding tickets.
A lot of overconfident sportbike riders show up too, causing a lot of problems.
Hence, its a zoo on the weekends due to the amount of bike traffic on the dragon.
Weekdays are nice, a few locals out to play and a few trucks to contend with.

Police on the gap

I head up to the dragon several times a year so I monitor their board occasionally:
