Texas Shindig

OK everyone...the event Kristin was talking about was the one I had mentioned earlier in 919VQ's intro post and before that in the Central Texas area. I was getting it officially recognized as a WT event (and getting help on how to organize one of these events from someone who has done it before. I did NOT get the teepee to use though!)

Well, I have 3 questions to get us started. The first is the date the second is the location and the last is place to have it.

For date, I am leaning towards July or August. Maybe July 18-20 or August 15-17. Could everyone post their preference on the date? I will add a separate post to keep track of the responses.

I am also trying to find a central location to have it in. We have interest in the thread from as far away as Tucson right now. The 2 places I am looking at right now are Kerrville and La Grange. I know a little about Kerrville and have some ride routes, etc. in that area, but know little about La Grange. It was suggested in the original thread in the Yellow States forum.

So I have looked at where I think most of the Texans are and the approximate number of people I remember from each area. The below chart lists origination, approx number of people in that area and proximity in hours to the best of my knowledge for the 2 different locations I was thinking about so far:

Origin...........Ppl...Kerrville...La Grange
Houston.........5........4..............2
San Antonio....2........1..............2
Austin............2........2..............1 1/2
Killeen............3........2 1/2........ 2 1/2
El Paso...........2........7..............10
Midland..........1........5...............7 1/2
Tucson Az......1........12.............15

I want to make sure it is as welcoming and inviting to as many people as possible. La Grange (or surrounding area) would be more central to the bulk of the people in the central or eastern part of the state, but 10 hours from the western residents. It would add up to 2 hours to some of the people to have it in Kerrville, but would remove 3 hours from the longest travelers. I am thinking that may be a better alternative. As far as plpace to have it, would you rather have it at a campground or a hotel?

Please select a location and type of place you would prefer and I will add those into the post as well as I get them.

Thanks,

Shawn

This is going to help tremendously...

Either location is close enough, that I could ride home at night if I can't take time off, so the dates don't matter either. I'd like a shower at night, but then again I hear that if you stink bad enough the cops won't mess with you.

Bump...

I am hoping to get enough responses to start looking for the location by next Friday May 16th. If anyone has other locations to suggest, please do so soon so we can add that to the location options.

Thanks,

Shawn

We have over 15 members from Texas. Tell us something...good, bad, whatever!
Are you interested? Any other location suggestions?
We WANT to hear your ideas.

Well, I had not added my numbers because it didn't matter either way to me, I am interested. I will go ahead and raise my hand for July, Kerrville, Hotel though. My wife is thinking about driving down with the kids and meeting us there. It is about 1 hour from SeaWorld San Antonio, and she is gonna spend Saturday when we are out playing at the waterpark with the kids. Doubt she will spend much time on the coasters without me there, but she might go ride a coaster or 2 and catch a few shows too. If anyone else is hesitant because of family, feel free to have them follow you down. Plenty to do in San Antonio while we are riding. They have outlet malls, the Alamo, the RiverWalk and SeaWorld just to name a few things. I will probably be spending this weekend there for Mother's Day for my wife (with the kids of course).

Are we going to do this regardless of the turnout, or will this ride be scrapped if too few commit? And what about beef, shouldn't his flexablility bring the count to 5?

You're right. I didn't have a doesn't matter slot, so I didn't add his numbers. I'll put him up right away.

I guess I should chime in.

I'm in between both locations, so either is cool with me. I can't commit to an overnight stay because I'm not sure of my financial responsibilities for either time frame, but I could meet up to ride at the very least. Either weekend is good for me.

Thanks for the hard work in putting this together. I'll do my best to make sure I'm in on it so the effort isn't wasted.

XRCajun and I are thinkin the July dates. Kerrville (but La Grange is fine too). I got my daughter all of July, so we'll probably trailer our bikes and bring our SO's and kids with us. But maybe for only 2 days/1 night.

July's gonna be hot, and August's gonna be hot as H&!!. So I say July over August.

WooHoo

Results are in! The Texas Edition WristTwisters ShinDig will be in Kerrville, TX on July 18-20. We have several rooms being held at the Sunday House Best Western in Kerville, TX. Send myself or Kristin a PM to get the information you will need to switch the reservation into your name. I have some ride ideas already (supposed to be a great set of roads in the area called Three Sisters) that I plan to check out before the ShinDig. If anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know so I can scout them out.

Thanks,

Shawn

Shawn,

Had a lot of fun yesterday. Glad you posted a link here. I'll come on the ride as long as work doesn't interfere.

Best ride in the area is the Twisted Sisters. There are some nice side trips too like Stonehenge and the bike museum. Also have to stop in Leaky so people can get their Twisted Sisters t-shirts.

9 5:05 PM 240.6 Arrive 2124 Sidney Baker St, Kerrville, TX 78028

SUMMARY
Driving distance: 240.6 miles
Trip duration: 9 hours, 5 minutes
Driving time: 6 hours, 35 minutes

Here is a suggested route for the Saturday trip. I have a 1/2 hour stop in Leakey at 10:15 (2 hrs into the ride) and a 2 hour stop at the LoneStar Motorcyle Museum. I figured we could eat at the Ace Cafe at the museum. We could stay there longer if needed/wanted. This would put us on the road during the cooler part of the day and at the museum in the hotter afternoon.

For dinner, I have heard a suggestion to eat at Mac & Ernie's Roadside Eatery. I was thinking we may want to eat a little closer to the hotel. Kerrville has a restaraunt listed on the Texas Monthly's top 50 BBQ places. It is called Buzzies BBQ.

We can have a meet and greet on Friday night and then on Sunday have a ride to someplace for breakfast. I was thinking maybe Fredricksburg area which is about 30 min away, but we can make it more interesting then that.

Sugegstions? Thoughts?

Great job planning the itinerary, Shawn.
That looks like a great ride.

Unfortunately, Texas BBQ doesn't stand up to NC 'que. Other than that , you're ready to go.

Looks great to me, Shawn! Glad we're including the 3 Sisters as part of our route, and Leakey as well. Can't do a Hill Country ride without including the 3 Sisters (335, 336, & 337)!

One thing I thought about was checking into some of the many biker friendly B&Bs in that area. Just a thought....

I’m still working out scheduling issues, so it’s a maybe.

Is Stonehenge II worth checking out if you’re in the neighborhood?

Here is a route that would go right by it.

Part of the ride.

iion,

That looks like it would be fun. I had someone else express interest in Stonehenge, so I think we should definitley do it! Hopefully you will be able to work the issues out with scheduling.

Where is everyone else at? We got just over a week to go. Who's still planning to go. It is gonna be great to have the WT people together to put some faces with names!

Shawn

I'm sooooo close to being able to go! Going to bear the heat and see if I can't get the one-way clutch issue straightened out tomorrow. I can't seem to find my stupid strap wrench, I have a feeling my roommate used it and forgot to put it back. One of his most annoying traits is being forgetful.

Looking good so far for me and Jim (XRCajun). We plan to stay in San Antonio if we can find a decent place to stay. Problem is we haven't booked anything yet. We just need a place for our wife and kids to be able to do the tourist thing while we ride. We'll ride Saturday only, though.

If not SA, another place we might stay is Fredericksburg, so they can walk around that town and do the tourist thing there. Plus it's only like 20-30 mins from Kerrville.
