Memphis TN people, speak up!

Hey, I'm going to be going to Memphis next month for the third stop in my BBQ tour of America. Any WT members from that area that know THE spots to hit? Any other sites I shouldn't miss while there?

Thanks

Man, been a while since I've had real east coast pizza, let alone NYC. I'll have to hit that. Is LDH from that area? would be sweet to meet him. I read 919.org countless times before I ever found out about WT or fireblades.

Its totally touristy, but, BB kings place on Beal Street is really good, plus it has a real cool atmosphere - Live music, awesome ribs and fried pickles, cold beer , and killer watresses -

I lived in Memphis for 19 years and definitely had my opinions about where to go.

Best Ambience - Charlie Vergo's Rendezvous. (downtown in the alley across from the Peabody. Great service from waiters that have been working there for decades. Ribs are dry rub only.)
Best Pulled Pork Sandwich - Neely's Interstate Barbecue (South 3rd St.)
Best Pulled Pork Plate - Corky's (East Memphis, Poplar and White Station)
Best Ribs - Cozy Corner (north downtown)
2nd Best Ribs - Pig 'N Whistle (Bartlett)

The Rendezvous has got to be the most overhyped attraction in the entire USA. Crap ass, rude service & BBQ that is no better than some street vendors in other cities.

Memphis is a **** hole, nothing more than the armpit of the south divided by racial tension & completely immersed in corruption & scandals.

The novelty of the touristy areas like Beale Street downtown quickly wears off by the end of a weekend & all you are left with for day to day living is some very nice places to eat with fairly hefty price tags to enjoy a semi-scenic night out. Normal restaurant chains that are usually the standard in other cities are just plain nasty to visit here because of the demographics of the city. The vast majority of workers just don't give a damn about anything & feel entitled to everything so customer service is lax from retail or food establishments unless you want to pay a premium for the same level of service you could get at a nominal price in most other major cities.

Entertainment is expensive, but we do have some incredible bands that play the smaller bars & grill type places all over the city. So many excellent bands in fact that none of them can get signed because the talent of musicians around here is staggering & the really good ones end up moving away to get noticed in a smaller pond.

All in all Memphis looks like a clean cut city as first glance, but take a good look when you get here & you will quickly realize that it is nasty, dirty & just downright unpleasant when you look past the facade of downtown & the stupid trolley. Crime rates are higher than ever & our police force is still too busy generating revenue by hiding behind parked cars during rush hour to write speeding tickets than to do any real crime prevention that might stop the murders or break-ins etc...

I said "best ambience". I will be the first to admit that the ribs aren't that great. Go there for a sausage plate and a pitcher of Mick. It's still fun if you've never been there before.

So....what are your true feelings about Memphis?

Been there once. Don't remember anything spectacular about about the place either.

Wow. I can't wait to go. Seriously though, Memphis is just one stop on my tour of BBQ places, not going to revel in the ambiance or see attractions, just have a passion for BBQ and Memphis is supposedly one of the capitols. So, any BBQ places you'd recommend?

Forget the g__damn Rendezvous. The other places that I mentioned are absolutely fantastic. Did I mention that I was on the judging committee of the Memphis in May International BBQ Cooking Contest? I know what's good! Who cares about Memphis' social ills? Enjoy yerself!!!!

Wow... I used to be employed at several of the strip clubs here working the door or DJ Booth etc, I guess by your reasoning that makes me a porn star.

No, by my reasoning, that's the only way you could see a woman naked for free.

Actually I was married to a stripper for 11 years & have a child by another one...

I've had more threesomes, felt more plastic & drank more liquor bought (with the dollars you were shoving into G-strings) than you will ever dream about

Just got back from Memphis and northern MS. Let's just say, not on my favorites list. Sorry, not to offend anyone.

I received lack luster service in most establishments and just down right lazy people in others. An example: I asked a young lady for something, she says, I don't know". I asked would you be able to find out? She huffs signs and uses her walkie-talkie to find out. It was just too much effort for her!

Sadly, I'll be spending about 10% of my time there going forward in my future.

Funny you should post this, because I'm making my trip there this weekend. Doesn't sound like you had the best experience...hopefully mine will be better. I'll have fun in any case cause my crazy cousin and my crazy friend are gonna go with me. Good things are going to happen...

All right. Just got to the dive of a hotel I'm staying in, and lo and behold, they have WiFi. Who would have thunk it?

Anyway, just got done with a large rack of ribs at Rendezvous. Pretty good. Not the best ribs I've ever had, but a good start to the weekend. Going to try Neely's tonight for a shredded pork sandwich. Yum.

Neely's. Best pork ribs I've had to date. Very good shredded pork BBQ. Their smoked turkey was really good. Their beef brisket was the worst I've ever had.
