Colorado-Taos NM run

Hey Wristtwisters,

Anyone want to join in on a ride from the Denver area down south to Taos NM for the weekend of Jun 25-27? I'm trying to set up a group to head that direction...I already have a couple of non-WT folks who want to go. Let me know what you think...We may push this back to the end of June, and this will not be the last time this year in case you can't make it this time around.

My family has a *nice* vacation place in Taos with beds for 6, a decent couch, and tent space for a bunch more...

Let me know!

Damnit! Too bad I have to work that weekend. I have been wanting to ride out to that area forever. I have always wanted to do a San Luis Valley/New Mexico trip.

Disregard...the Taos house is not available this weekend, but since nobody seemed to be interested it shouldn't be a real biggie, right? lol

I'd like to start re-planning this trip for July 16, 17 & 18th though...post up if you want to go. I'm pretty flexible on this, so if a better time/dat would work better say so! It could even be during the week...

lots of questions.

Woohoo, that ride sounds awesome. What will be the route? How much room will there be? Do we all chip in for cost or, is there one? How early on the 16th will we be leaving? I I'm very interested in this trip, it will be the longest ride I will have made.

Hey Jim, welcome aboard! As I mentioned in the original post, my family has a nice little place down there...3 bedrooms, 3 bath, nice kitchen, lots of fenced-in patio/ tent space outside... the only cost will be food/drink related, plus gas of course. there is an indoor fireplace, an outdoor fireplace, a fire pit, a gas bbq, lots of stars at night, and some excellent riding!

The route is I-25 to Walsenberg, then west-ish over La Veta Pass to Ft Garland, and on south through the San Luis valley to Taos. It's all either interstate or state highway, but there is lots of gorgeous countryside. Once in NM, there is Taos, Santa Fe an hour or so away...it's really worth spending some time there! There is a hot springs which is a nice place to go if you bring your significant other, or someone you think might become your significant other.... there are several excellent wineries, good food & good times!

An interesting side-trip, time allowing, would be to head south to Madrid, NM where "Wild Hogs" was filmed, or go ride Route 66 for a ways...

Route

Lets get this thing going!

Crap! I am leaving Great Sand Dune National Park tomorrow to head over to Gunnison. I can't figure out my route because I am so close to the other National Parks in Utah when I get over there. Problem is I am going to hit Rocky Moutain National Park as well. I will be floating around this area for a while(unemployed and just seeing the sites)(by the way, Kansas is the most boring state just barely edging out Mississippi). If anybody knows of good rides or wants to ride let me know. I will have internet access again tomorrow so I will check back.

If you make it to the denver/boulder/loveland/Ft collins area I will be happy to meet up with you and do some riding....check your PM's dwm. Enjoy the Gunnison Canyon, it's marvelous scenery!

I'd be interested in heading down there with you guys, but I'd need to come back on the 17th. I wouldn't mind cruising down then taking the course Dave mentioned for a nice casual return on my way back, I'll also look into what I can swing with work and the 18th if you don't mind one more.

So, had to foot the bill for a new roof on the house. Ouch! I can't take any more time off this Summer. I am sad that I will miss out on this Taos ride. Thanks for the offer Shadow. Hope you all have a great time. post pics!

Hwy 17 through Moffat is a perfect piece of road called a "Shotgun Barrel" It is one of the straightest roads you will ever see. I put it on the route so you guys can go "Balls to The Walls" on your bikes. Find that max speed and have a little fun. Rest of the route is full of twisties and some of the best damn scenery you can get in Colorado.

I might have to meet you on Sunday down in Taos but won’t be able to spend the weekend. I had my schedule shifted at work and now have Sundays Mondays off for the next three months. I am already missing my Friday Saturdays.
