Central Texas Summer Solstice Shindig!

I'm planning a long ride for the longest day of the year, June 21st! The loop I have planned out so far is ~380mi door to door from my place. With under 20 miles of repeated road (half of which would be in the city.) This trip will include the 3 sisters, highway 16, highway 46, 1863, 41, 1340, 83. At the very least there will be cold beer waiting at my house after the trip. For those traveling I have a full sized bed and enough couch room to sleep 3. Plenty of room in the garage for bikes, and enough tools to take care of most needs.

So we're talking about the weekend of June 21st correct? I think I can say now I am up for it. I might have some scheduled stuff changing around but I'll be able to adjust it between now and then.

Justi giving this a little bump since the time is drawing a little closer. Wanted to give it a little visibility in case anyone gets it in their head they might want to jump in for what I am sure is going to be a great ride.

Thanks for the bump! Besides leaving the city, almost all of the roads will be great fun. Even one road that only has 2 curves, its like a roller coaster.

I grew up in Kerrville, literally, was born and raised there and the area around Mountain Home. The roads in that area are great, it's funny though that the whole time I lived there I never had a motorcycle and never really got to enjoy them properly. Back in the day we tore it up in cars though, lol... I'm looking forward to getting down there and just seeing where the day takes us!!!!

I'm itching to get down there and do some riding. I got a doctor appointment Friday but after I get done with that I am planning on riding down to the area.

This Friday, or the 20th of June? This weekend I expect tons of traffic in the hill country. Squids will be everywhere, as will LEO, so I'll be riding quite mellow. This also marks the end of the season for my river road run which is the road I hit when I just need some twisties without interruption. Unfortunately it is a very popular float spot that's full of drunk/hungover drivers until later in the year when things cool off considerably.

Yeah I have the doctor thing Friday morning of that weekend (the 20th, 21st, etc) and I am thinking after that I am going to just roll down from Dallas and meet up with some family in Kerrville Friday evening, and then leave a little early to meet up in SA and ride the ride but I can mold my plans to whatever you are planning as far as a scheduling. I missed any previous rides that you might have done so if you want to smarten me up I'm up for pretty much anything. I know it's a month out so there is plenty of time to catch me up. I'd love to go ride that area this weekend but I'm not getting back to Dallas until about midnight Friday the idea of riding south on the back roads or 35 from Dallas at midnight or later is a little much for my blood.

I'll save you boredom... just meet at 16 and 337 for the Shindig. I have no real plans for this weekend and certainly wouldn't ask you to make that ride after such a long day. If I knew of good stuff between us I'd be up for that this weekend, but most of the fun is well west of 281.

Yep! The best part of 16 is between Kerrville and Medina, so you may double up on that for the shindig.

Beef, I met with another TWT forum member this morning to pick up a good hitch mounted bike hauler and he might check it out but also has a friend who might get interested as well. I told him to check the TWT forum link as well so maybe we can round up a nice little get together.

Hey Beef I was wondering if you happen to use a BT comm system or anything during rides? I've been on the verge of getting one, mostly for listening to tunes and stuff for riding but I've for the cost getting the voice system has it's merits. I'm never gonna take a call on it but I figure in some group rides it would be fantastic but I've heard each brand kinda doesn't work with another so I was just curious if you had any input?

I have a uclear ubc100 I think. I have tried it as a comms device, I doesn't work well at highway speed due to the wind noise, which may be due to the helmet. It works fine at lower (sub 70mph) speeds. I use it mostly for nav/music.

I believe Sena recently released an update claiming to add support for linking to other comms units.

Did you get it figured out?

We're a week closer. I plan on scoping out the bulk of the route this weekend. I was going to join the group ride that loudanddave (of youtube fame) is doing in Austin on Saturday but work is getting in the way.

Here's the plan...

Kickstands up at 0800, departing from the Shell station at 1604 and 16 in Helotes. 16N to 337W to camp wood. 55N to 335N to 41E. 41E to 336S. 336S to vanderpool (via 83S) 83N to 39E to Hunt. 39E to 1340 (W or N?) out of Hunt. 1340 N/W to 41. 41E to 27S. 27S to either 16S or 173S (I haven't seen 173, and wouldn't mind...) to 16S. 16S to 46E to Boerne. 46E to Ammann. Ammann to E Amman to Bulverde Rd to 1863 (in Bulverde) to 281. That's all I have in the bag at this point. I rode nearly that route today and was left feeling beaten. Then again I was moving at a good clip trying to make sure I was not going to run out of daylight since I got a late start. I made good time. I left around 10am, stopped for a meal and a couple of smoke breaks/gas stops but other than that I was rolling all day. Pay attention to your gas if you go! Once you turn on to 55N, you won't see gas (or much food) again until we get back to Vanderpool. Outside of that the only thing that concerns me is they are prepping for construction on 16 and 39. The good news is it will not be in the fun part. The bad news is, it looks like they are going to do a chip and seal. I think we will have plenty of daylight left if anyone has other roads that are far from straight. I wish I could cut 41 out of the route, but I don't want to double back a bunch of times to avoid it.

Sounds good for me. I am going truck down with the bike to Kerrville on Friday and will probably tool around down there Friday and Sunday in addition to our ride on Saturday (exploring out around Harper, Mountain Home and Fredricksburg). Meeting up on Saturday at Helotes seems fine with me. I'll probably just highball it there on 10 and then enjoy the backroads with you guys!!! Looking forward to meeting up and riding. Between here and TWT how many are we up to as far as headcount?

Well, I am ok with just the two of us if that is how it works out. That definitely makes the lunch decisions, route options, and smoke/water breaks easier to determine. I was hoping that another 1 or 2 would show up but I guess we still have a little time to wait and see.

Hey if he is planning on riding down I'd be interested to know what time he is planning on leaving. I got a few things to do Friday morning and was gonna leave early but I can wait a while and leave later if he is riding.. I'm good either way, just let me know and I'll PM you my cell # (which I was gonna do at some point anyways).

http://goo.gl/maps/69nqa Here's the route. I was considering adding a few more roads, but we'll play that one by ear. I made minimal stops when scouting and was exhausted by the time I got home. If my coworker goes I will be able to rest up at the turns waiting on him.
