Central Texas

Is there anyone that is either in/around central Texas and would like to ride or that knows of any good riding roads in the area (I am in the Killeen area)? I have just finally gotten 2 wheels under myself since moving to Texas in June and looking for places to ride.

Maybe too far from Killeen for ya, but i have been mapping out some rodes southwest of Austin. If you draw a box using Kyle, Dripping Springs, Blanco and Canyon Lake you will see the general area.

iion,

Looks like it is 1 1/2 - 2 hours just to get there. That may be interesting on days when I want to play all day, but I was hoping for some 1-2 hour local rides as well.

Maybe sometime you could show me some of the roads you have found, though.

How far are you fom China Springs and Waco/Lake Whitney? I have some family out there, and I can remember some nice elevation and curves in those areas.

I actually purchaed my bike in Waco. It is about 1 hour from here. I can drive 1.5 hr north to Dallas, 1 hr 15 min south to Austin or 1 hour east to Waco. Centrally located in the middle of everything. I have recently found that there is a Southern Cruisers club in the area. I will probably try to get in touch with them to go for some rides. Just looking for others as well to ride with and get some good ideas of places to ride.

Saw another CenTx rider on another thread, and thought I would give this a BUMP.

So far we have (that I know of):

scgstuff - Copperas Cove/Killeen area
smittyrock - Killeen
str8jacket - Round Rock/Austin area
beefsalad - San Anotonio area (you legal yet?)
texastraffic - Cedar Park/Austin area
iion - Austin area

in the centex area. Anyone else to add to the list?

TexasTraffic, I saw your post about Lime Creek (watch out for gravel....residents don't like the bikes) and 1431. There are several other good roads in the nearby area to you. Maybe we can setup a ride next weekend on Sunday.

No.....but that hasn't exactly stopped me. Though I must admit I do tend to stay 'in town.' I do need to get out of town, but the girlfriend and myself have been busy house hunting.

Shawn,
I got the 919 on Saturday and did some basic checkout & maintenance on it.

Today I took it to work. It is a nice ride.

Next Sunday? Let's explore that!

One of the next things I need to do is get a replacement headlight assy for the 750 Nighthawk, and maybe some cosmetic work on the tank. My girlfriend & I went out for a short ride on Sunday and the bike ended up on its side a time or two (I underestimated the issues one can have on an unfamiliar bike ).

Anyone know a good parts source?

Ohh....that stinks that you just got it and already have some rash. Are you and the gf OK? Good way for her to stop liking bikes....

You may want to post this in another thread for the parts stuff. Otherwise, it may not get viewed by many people.

Sunday is supposed to be ~65 now. Yesterday it said 69 and rain, today it does not say rain. We will have to keep an eye on the weather and decide a little later in the week probably. Anything would be better than the ride Smitty and I did last weekend when it was in the 30-40s.

I may have not been clear - I was riding the new-to-me 919, my GF was on my '95 Nighthawk. There's no rash on the 919.

My GF has wanted to get a bike again for years; she's just not been able to afford one. She's had a MC endorsement for a long time. Her preference is for a cruiser in the 650-750 cc range. I thought the 750 Nighthawk would be a good fit for her, though she commented last night that the bike is "top heavy and the brakes are grabby".

As far as weather goes for next weekend, its too early to rely on the forecast. Wednesday has rain forecast... that's about as far out as I worry about. More than 3 days and the forecast is a WAG.

I'll post some questions about parts in the "Equipment & Accessories" forum (good idea - thanks).

I'll more than likey be in if we can get something rolling for the weekend. All depends on what's going on with the family. Went on a ride for an hour or so this weekend weather was very good, not too hot and not too cool.

ScgStuff, Hey bud I'll be back soon, you still have that one route we did, cant remeber the name of the road but it was a blast. It might have been the same day we did the Cow Creek road, I just remember it being a fun raod with lots of turns, I wanna say FM969, I could be wrong though. I'll hit you up as soon as I get back. I'm originally from Austin and know many great roads west of there. If you are willing to make the 90 minute ride from Killeen, I recommend Lime Creek Rd. which runs along Lake Travis, and 1431 from Lago Vista to Marble Falls. Many more roads can be found north west of San Antonio near Bandera.

That was 963 that you are talking about Chad. We took that the day we did PR4 down to Inks Lake State Park. 1431 used to be more fun, but they are straightening it out now in some places. If you are willing to do some miles on a day or get an overnight stay, Twisted Sisters (or Three Sisters...heard it both ways) were GREAT (Texas Shindig from last year). I would love to do those roads again. I noticed coming thru there back to the hotels in Kerrville, there were cabins along the river for rent with rope swings and slides into the river. Thought that might be a cool gathering spot if we could find one big enough that would allow tent camping as spillage. hmmmmm.....May have to start planning another shindig soon. Maybe this time before the heat of the summer.....

The twisted sisters are just outside my back door. Ok, so maybe it's a short ride to them, but still! I'm up for a shindig. I've only been "out there" twice, one ended very badly, the other was kind of unsettling for me. I was in some tight twists heading up hill, trying to keep up with alinosa. I had plenty of lean going when I hit some washboard crap and the front end started to slide. I managed to straighten up and brake, but by the time I got stopped I was facing a guard rail on the wrong side of the road. Dude on the R1 behind me almost did the same thing trying to avoid me. Once again, I was almost 'gotten' trying to 'keep up' with another rider. What makes it bad is alinosa's not been on his 9er nearly as long as I have

Shawn I'm serious about this, so put into works bud and if you need help with funds to secure the location let me know and I'll take care of it. I'm so ready to get the hell outta here i can't even tell you. I even put fresh tires on last time I was home so I'm good to go. Now if I could just get those gloves from WIM.
