Carolina peeps....

What else do you have to do in February?
This is supposed to be an extremely well run event.
Come join AJCombs, me, and various members of our respective dysfunctional families.

SandBlast Rally - February 9, 2008 - Cheraw, SC

Survive to Win.

Welcome spectators and volunteers to South Carolina for the first event of the year! This is going to be a great year, there will be eighty vehicles entering, making this the largest regional-level rally in the country! Come out for the excitement of the rally cars and the RallyMoto™ bikes!
Yeah, bikes! How cool is that? It's like a little taste of Dakar mixed in with all the regular crazies who are going to be tearing up the forest. 2008 is going to be loads of fun, come on down! You can come spectate for only $5, or get an even better seat by volunteering as a marshal. As a marshal you'll be right on the course, get a free T-shirt and lunch, and get to come to the awards ceremony with with all the drivers. Now that's *thumbs up*. Want a sneak peek at what's going down in the woods? Take a look at the more than 3000 pictures that we have from last year! Cars and bikes tearing up all sorts of awesome sand!

Just checked my calendar and I have my kids that weekend, as well as the night of the 8th is our annual awards banquet at work so no way I'll be able to go. A little disappointed as I just checked out the site and it really looks like a lot of fun. I would LOVE to go. Take lots of pics to share afterwards!!!

Allright. AJ can be the chaperon! I'm gonna leave out of Winston wicked early Sat morning. I don't have a ticket, so I'll have to go through Patrick first. I figure it's about a 3-hour drive for me. Or ride, depending on the weather.

All you Carolina boys missed a good one today.
A 70 degree day spent WAY out in the woods; it was just too much fun.
The top bike riders were unfrickin believable. The top cars were scary.

Nice getting to meet you Brevity, even if I did have to put up with some Duke bs and peachtree and stump jokes. Good seeing you again, Adam.

This event is a must see if you get the chance.
Pics to follow.

The coolest thing about the rally was where it was held. The Sandhills are, as the name implies, a pine forest with a deep sand base. The race took place in a state park, miles out in the boonies, right next to the town of Patrick. Patrick SC, "Home of the annual Pine Needle Festival". No joke. I can not wait to go back there. I had no idea it even existed. This pic shows you the terrain-

My apologies for the picture size. I have a new camera and new software and haven't quite figured it out yet.

The other cool thing about the rally was the fact that all entries had to be street legal, as they had to travel on public roads between the four stage areas.
Have a problem with that tire?

Definitely a good time! And it was great to meet Kristen and hubby, and Adam! First time I ever saw a rally, and it was, as Kristen said, way out in the woods, and the weather was perfect. The handful of stewards and workers that we spoke to were well-informed and very helpful (except for one seemingly over-stated comment about the total dirt-road mileage in the county...).

Here's some pics from my camera...

He was Irish... Which brings up an interesting observation. Alot of international flavor in this event, albeit, the ones we taked to all lived in the states. People from all over were here, but in small overall numbers; Florida, Maryland, Virginia, alot from New York...

That is too awesome! I wish we had more events like that here in the U.S.

Hey Kristen, are they planning on making that an annual event?

I'm pretty sure it has been for a couple years anyway.

This event was great! my shots were not really all that great I had more fun watching and just talking to the others in attendance instead of trying to get good pictures! There were tons of people taking pictures though.

We got too see several near aw crap moments on the Motorcycle riders and a couple that actually done some damage to the cars!
I stayed a little longer than the rest to watch the night driving and I thought that the guys would slow up alot well maybe they did a little but not much. There was this one team that had really made an impression on us all day and he took one turn a little to tight and rolled it over on the side! Made for a good show but hated it for them cause they were up to that point probably making really good times!

looks like that course was deep and powdery. Did most/many/some/few bikes fall? CRF230L might be light enough to have an edge there.

The smallest bike entered was a DRZ. Overall winner was actually on an Aprilia 5.5.

The forest is open year round to street legal vehicles. We are going to take the bikes down soon and check it out.

Thanks! I forgot all about the SaabRally.com car. That one actually has a nice motor in it so it should have been a bit quicker than the GRM one. I think I may just have to go to the NY Rally now.
