Saturday was business as usual 2 practice sessions and then the Solos.
Sunday however was one that we'll remember for a long time.
We woke up to pouring rain, just as forcasted. We had pulled the wheels off the bikes Saturday and decided to wait to make our desicion in the morning. We ran our wheels over to the Bridgestone guy and had the rain tires mounted.
As a group we have very limited expeirince in the rain, Nesba will run on a damp or drying track but will generally shut down of its pouring, so this was going to be interesting at the very least.
Went out for the practice sessions and was amazed at how much grip is available with full rains. By the end of the second session I was begining to feel the bike move a little, but kept a very conservative pace. Passed a few people and felt pretty good.
As the day progressed and the rain kept falling the standing water stretched out over different areas of the track surface and was a few inches deep in places. In some corners you could alter your line to keep your momentum. But in a few places you just had to stand the bike up and roll thru the puddles....err.... PONDs. The rain tires worked GREAT and gave unbelievable feedback. You can feel the front start to slide a bit and you can catch it with you body weight and pressure on the bars. The rear would spin pretty easily, but it was always predictable and controlable. It only kicked me outta the seat twice.
The front stretch was a crap shoot. There was standing water everywhere and you could hear the motors rev's rise and fall as your rear tire would spin/grip/spin/grip along accompanied with an very nervous head shake as the front tire would slide and hydroplane along the surface. Throw in the spray from the guys in front of you to make it impossible to see anything and you get the idea. I think I pissed myself every lap of every race, but who would know anyway?
We all kept it together pretty much and had a great weekend.
John finished with a 5th in A SS
2nd in A SBK
3rd in B SS
3rd in B SBK
Matt finished with a 3rd in HWT SS and crashed out of the lead in HWT SBK.
I came home with a 2nd in HWT SS
2nd in HWT SBK
1st in HWT Senior SBK.
Johnny (pink Kawi) raced on Pirelli Supercorsa DOT's !!!???!!! and scored a point by bringing it home in 15th. But when the race was over he decided he wasn't crazy enough to do that twice. I cant blame him. I wouldn't have tried it at all.
All in all a fun weekend and a solid points event. Were all in the top 5 in points of all our classes.
attached a couple pics to give you guys and idea of the conditions.
