50mph Pit-Road Speed Limit at Daytona!?!?!?!?

Roadracing World Article

That's crap! I love watching Miguel come off the bank and pin it down pit-road.

Very NASCAR-esque of them.

Used to like watching Scott Russell endo all the way into the pits, and wheelie out.

For me, the AMA already ruined the Daytona 200 with the switch to Formula Extreme. Now this. Next will be restrictor plates.

IN the grand scheme of things, it promots two stops over three.

As long as the rules apply to everyone, it is still racing.

I think it's a good idea, in the saftey theme of things. I was on the east end of the "hot" pit for an endurance race last fall helping out one of the teams. I got to do the gas! woooooot! During one of the pits, one of the other racers came off the track at FULL speed (Maybe 170mph ??). Should anything go wrong, anybody on the trackside of the wall would be in deep doodoo.

In the racer scheme of things, I think it sucks. Screw a speed limit. What a pain in the arse! How do they plan on enforcing it?

Probably with the speed limit gauge they have at the other AMA races. The guys can see the speed on the display.

And I second (err... or third) the motion. I was in the same race and let me tell you it's seriously hazardous. Coming off the bank at... well whatever a superhawk will do... and trying to gather your references is a little disorienting. Then there's the difference in speeds between those pulling over and those going the whole distance of the pits. Most everyone knows to pull a little left before actually pitting, but I still almost a$$ plugged a few bikes. Lastly, and most importantly IMO, is the stopping part. Once committed to a full brake stop you don't have room for error... which is ok if all the other teams are on top of it and don't get in your way. Sometimes it's tough when a bike is screaming in at that speed and you have someone block your intended path of entry. I had it happen and the vicious cycle of stoppie / front slide / stoppie that ensued was enough for me to come in at 8/10ths for the rest of the day. I like no speed limit as a racer, but safety wise a speed limit makes sense.
