I kind of got the itch after watching Scott dial-in his XR650L. My criteria was it had to be 2003 or newer, in very good condition, have less than 3K miles and I wanted to pay less than 3K$. My friends told me I would never find what I was looking for, for 3 grand or less.
This what I found: 2003 XR650L with just under 2,700 miles and in pretty decent shape.
Cost: Two electric guitars. (zero cost to me)
We'll see how the mods go, as I'm not even sure the direction I want to take with it yet (dual-sport or motard).
It'll be a fun little project for the fall & winter!
Very clean, very stock. If you decide to go dual sport with it do yourself a huge favor and dump those DeathWings as soon as possible, they're dangerous off pavement.
Congratulations
Sorry, shoulda been clearer, yes DeathWings are the tires, I'm not sure how Bridgestone thought those things should ever be used off road.
I thought the DW's would have been the mirrors, get rid of them if you're going to ride off road. I had a nice foldable mirror on my XR250L, I think I got it from Dennis Kirk, fold it down behind the guages when off road.
Nice find! I too was bitten by the DS bug last year and have fallen head over heels with backroading! My intention was without a doubt supermoto it but I decided to go on a ride with a stranger who did backroads and I have NEVER since even thought about supermoto! Enjoy your new ride and go get it dusty for christs sake!

There's a used one of those sitting at my local dealer for the last year. It's only got 1800 kms on it and has a pipe and jet kit already. To bad they want to much for it still or it would be coming home with me.

That's the nice thing about the XRL's they really do keep their value, that and they're bulletproof

Agreed, stock tires suck. They're pretty much there just to keep the rims off the ground! I may lace up some 17's and run Pilot Powers.

You better get looking for a Superduke now, I saw one on e-bay for 5 guitars
Thanks Mike, I just had to be patient to find the right deal.
I saw that Superduke on ebay....it's only worth 4 guitars!

I like that "all white" look of your machine Woody! How does that DG slip-on sound?
I think I'm leaning towards doing the Motard thing with this bike (kinda like that plated XR250R I wish I never sold), but will build a seperate set of 17's and keep the stock wheels in case I want to do any off-road stuff.
There's a guy in my industrial complex who works for Vance & Hines and can get me employee cost on anything in the Parts Unlimited catalog (V&H and PU are owned by the same Company).
anyone with XR. I just want to know how long are those forks. I found XR with front end issues and wondering If I can find fork that will fit
My XR650L is stored in the back of my office building, I can go and measure it sitting there, but don't have a way to measure the forks fully extended.
Just a little update on my XR650L project. Rebuilt the hubs and wheels. The spokes were really crappy looking so I unlaced, polished and re-laced. Cleaned and re-lubed steering head, swingarm and linkage. Cleaned and modified airbox. Installed BRP top clamp to help get the bars out of my lap and open up the cockpit a little bit. Getting ready to rebuild my forks & shock sometime in the next few weeks. It's been a slow process but hopefully I'll have it done by late April/early May.

What kind of front forks do you have, and did you open up your air box to breathe ?

Front forks are stock, but will have Racetech Gold Valves & springs inside.
Pulled the snorkle, removed the big deflector lip from the inside and drilled out the right side. I also modified the seat base where it fits over the top of the airbox. Honda seems to seal off the top of the box pretty well (probably for noise abatement) only allowing it to draw air from the sides of the seat base. I don't mind a little intake noise if thats what it takes to let it breath better!
Hey guys.....I'll post a build thread of my bike in this section.
Seriously --- you all need to look into the BMW GS wheel sizes...... they have a wider 19" 2.50 front, and a supermoto 4.25 17" rear. You can then run sticky versions of sport-touring tires....or full TKC80 knobbies. As far as contact patch goes --- the front rim is only about 1/2" smaller than a typical supermoto 17" ---- you have about as big of a contact patch with it.
I'm running a set of the Continental Road Attack 2's for the spring.
----- I took my stock DR650 hubs....and had the new rims laced to them....so I was able to retain my cush drive and keep my OEM brake rotors/sprockets...... They cost about $350 a wheel to have laced up. (I then paid a little more for the better quality Black anodized SUN rims)
so......this is the picture that changed my mind about the capabilities of the 19" front.....LOL. Yeah --- that should work. and this is with Metzler Tourance 'Adventure Tires'

That DR looks like alot of fun!
Thats a good point you bring up about the 19" front wheel and tire selection. I ran some Maxxis Pro-Maxx tires on my XR250R with the stock 18" / 21" wheels a couple a years ago and I could still drag the pegs with no problem. I even rode that little 250 on a couple of Rob Tharalsons "Periodic Rides" and had no problem keeping up because of my corner speed!
I think for the time being, I'm just going to run some Bridgestone BT-45's on the stock wheels....I mean lets be honest, it's an XR650L not a sport bike and 17" really are overkill on a pig like the XR (unless of course I can trade more guitars for some 17's!)

The bike I first learned to ride on. I got it in 1999, been thinking to make
some changes but just can't bring my self to it. I have had some hella good times in the dirt with her!
